Disney is developing a spin-off of Peter Pan based around the popular fairy, Tinkerbell. The character of Tinker Bell has been a staple of Walt Disney animation, first appearing in the 1953 animated film, Peter Pan. Since then, the character has been as much a part of the Disney iconography as Mickey Mouse and is often featured as a symbol of Disney magic showcased in various other forms of media and the theme parks.

Tinkerbell was often used in the opening and closing animation of Walt Disney's television programs. In 2005, Tinkerbell was the featured character in a new line of products called the Disney Fairies, with tie-in merchandise and voiced by actress Mae Whitman in six direct-to-DVD feature films focused on Pixie Hollow from 2008 to 2015. The character was also played by iZombie star, Rose McIver, on the ABC series, Once Upon a Time. Disney will feature a new version of the character in the upcoming film, Peter Pan & Wendy, played by Black-ish star Yara Shahidi.

Now, it appears that Disney is developing another project based around Tinkerbell, called Tink. According to Deadline, at the end of 2021, Gary Marsh is stepping down as President and Chief Creative Officer of Disney Branded Television after 33 years. Marsh will be launching his own production company at Disney and will be developing series for Disney's various streaming and linear broadcast services including Disney+, Hulu, Disney Channel, FX, Freeform, ABC, National Geographic, and Disney Jr. One of those series will be Tink.

The project Tink shares a name with a live-action reimagining film of the character Disney has been planning since 2010, when Elizabeth Banks was cast as the title fairy. Then in 2015, Reese Witherspoon joined Tink, however, in the six years since the project was announced, no word was given on the film, and the studio opted for a more straightforward remake of Peter Pan. Now, it appears Tink has been reworked from a film into a television program, similar to Magic Kingdom, which was originally developed as a film in the early 2010s and now will become a streaming series from Battlestar Galactica creator, Ronald D. Moore.

There is no word yet on if the upcoming Tink will be animated or live-action, but it appears to be a standalone project separate from the upcoming Peter Pan & Wendy. The fact that it remains set as a series continues with a recent trend in many of Disney's reimaginings of their classic animated films, where projects that are based off older Disney films like Lady and Tramp and the upcoming Pinocchio are set for streaming releases, while projects based on more modern Disney Renaissance films like The Little Mermaid are set for big-screen theatrical treatment. A series based around Tinkerbell could serve as an interesting test to see if the characters can work in long-form serialized stories.
