King Kong is one of the most famous movie characters of all time, a monster being that is known around the world. There's been various variations and presentations of the giant ape over time, but two of the best are Peter Jackson's King Kong (2005), and Kong: Skull Island (2017).

While both of these movies are ultimately about the classic monster, they tell that story differently and present the character in unique ways. While each movie does it well, there are certain elements that make each one slightly stronger overall. But when they're compared together, which of these two movies is the best?

King Kong: Stronger Script

Because of the length of this movie, there is a lot of dialogue to get through, as it's not all about the action and fighting here. However, Peter Jackson did a fantastic job at bringing together a talented bunch of actors who could work the story in an entertaining fashion.

The movie is filled with amazing dialogue all the way through, which really hooks audiences into everything that the characters are doing. While the script is entertaining in the newer iteration of Kong as well, it is the 2005 movie that has the edge in that department.

Kong: Skull Island: Greater Action

This movie is really just a classic monster smashing story, with great action running all the way through it. Whether it's Kong battling monsters, the humans fighting creatures, or Kong wrecking helicopters out of the sky, this movie is filled with action scenes.

It makes for an exciting viewing experience as things go from one fight to another at an exhilarating pace. The scenes are well constructed too, feeling like huge blockbuster spectacles, which is exactly what people want from a movie such as this.

King Kong: Greater Battle With Dinosaurs

One of the classic things that people expect when it comes to King Kong is for him to end up battling against a different monster at some stage. That's something that both movies provide, but the 2005 version just does it better, despite the fact that overall, the newer movie has a lot more action.

Kong's brawl with the T-Rex is an epic encounter that leaves audiences stunned. They go to war and push each other to their limits, with the dinosaur getting plenty of hits in on the ape, and while the newer movie does also give us a great Kong fight, Peter Jackson was able to deliver on this one better.

Kong: Skull Island: Doesn't Drag On

One of the complaints about Peter Jackson's version of King Kong is simply how long the movie is. While there's no doubt that it's a great adventure, it cannot be denied that it does have moments where it drags on, with certain scenes filling time.

That movie runs for a whopping 187 minutes, which is a very long runtime that a lot of people simply don't want to commit to. Meanwhile, Kong: Skull Island is 118 minutes long, which is a little easier to manage and go through, making it more rewatchable at times.

King Kong: The Greatest Kong

Considering that King Kong himself is the key element of both of these movies, it's an important part to get right, and the 2005 version does it the best. With Andy Serkis performing the motion capture for the character, the chances were always high that this was going to be a great character.

The facial expressions and the emotion that the character was able to convey without saying a word were incredible and really highlight what a talent Serkis is as an actor. But it also drove the movie forwards and really made it an impressive viewing experience.

Kong: Skull Island: Greater CGI

A movie like this with huge creatures like King Kong is always going to rely upon a certain level of CGI. Because of that, it should be no surprise that Kong: Skull Island provided the best CGI out of the two movies, which made Kong himself look more impressive.

This is simply due to the fact that the movie is just more modern. Technology had advanced significantly by the time this movie came around, much as it had between the original and Peter Jackson's version, and because of that, the CGI was able to make this movie look a lot more realistic.

King Kong: Less Predictable

This version of King Kong was very much a standalone movie and because of that, the movie was a lot less predictable. People could get emotionally invested in the beast and wonder whether or not he'd be able to survive the movie.

However, when it came to the more recent version of the character, there was a feeling that it would be leading into further movies, and because of that, it was slightly more obvious that Kong would survive everything.

Kong: Skull Island: Stronger Human Characters

Every King Kong movie is all about the giant ape himself, but there's no doubt that it is the human's in the movie that really tells the story. They're the ones who piece it all together and out of the two, it is Skull Island that just edges it with having better characters.

All of them are well balanced and have their own specific reasons for being on the island. They compliment each other well and go against each other perfectly at times too, and that is something that makes them a lot easier to connect with.

King Kong: More Emotion

While the humans in the latest version of the movie have a lot more personality, when it comes to Kong himself, it is Peter Jackson's that brings the most emotion. The connection that Kong has with Ann is something that drives the movie and it gives audiences something to latch onto throughout.

This aspect of the movie gives Kong a lot of heart, rather than just having him appear as a mystic monster. This connection is a tremendous part of the movie and it is the core aspect of the movie which is a big reason a lot of people prefer this version.

Kong: Skull Island: A Fresh Story

Ultimately, the main reason that people prefer Kong: Skull Island is simply that the movie is a fresh one. Peter Jackson's story is essentially a remake of the original, adding new details and using technology along the way to make it a more exciting and enjoyable movie.

However, Kong: Skull Island provides a totally different look at the character, giving a new spin on the story which made for an exciting adventure that was unique and enjoyable. There was no way of predicting everything that was going to happen, like in Peter Jackson's version, which made it a lot of fun to watch.
