Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo say that fans will easily recognize Peter Dinklage in the film, but won't reveal anything more than that. Working on their third Marvel Studios project, the brothers once again team-up with Captain America writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for the MCU's most ambitious film yet. Bringing together almost every key player in the successful franchise, the movie pits Earth's Mightiest Heroes against their biggest and baddest adversary yet, Mad Titan Thanos.
It's impressive that Marvel Studios has kept Dinklage's Infinity War role secret this long, considering how relentless fans are in digging up whatever information they can about the film. Rumors emerged last year that the Game of Thrones actor was a member of the movie's cast, but it wasn't until the release of the final poster that Dinklage was confirmed for Infinity War. Nevertheless, the Russos are confident that fans will easily spot the actor when he appears in the upcoming blockbuster.
Speaking with JOE.ie as they continue their press tour for Infinity War, the directing duo was asked about Dinklage's mysterious role in the film. Joe Russo promised that "It may take you a beat or two, but you’ll certainly recognize him,” before his laughing brother Anthony finished the statement, adding “That’s all we can say.”
The main takeaway from the filmmakers' clipped answer is Joe's comment insinuating that Dinklage may not be immediately recognizable in the movie. Granted that there are several dozens of characters in the film, it's possible that Dinklage will either be heavy prosthetics for his role or that he's playing a motion-capture character. Paparazzi photos taken of Dinklage last year showed him sporting a red hairdo similar to Pip the Troll from the comics, while other popular fan theories argue that he could be playing MODOK.
While Kevin Feige previously hinted that Infinity War's Black Order would be voiced by big name actors, Dinklage's billing in the Infinity War poster suggests that he's playing more than a vocal role. That said, the poster didn't mention Jeremy Renner being a cast member, so it might be best to not read too much into who was and wasn't listed in the movie's one-sheet. With the benefit of hindsight, this marketing strategy is a great way to throw fans a curveball and keep them guessing about how significant (or not) certain actors and characters will be to the film.
It's interesting that even after all these months, the press hasn't tried (at least not hard enough) to ask Dinklage about his unknown Avengers: Infinity War role. Not that he'll slip and inadvertently say something he shouldn't; if anything, he's a pro when it comes to keeping spoiler secrets and evading trick questions after his years of experience promoting Game of Thrones. Nevertheless, with the film just two weeks away from debuting, it won't be too long before we finally find out what part Dinklage plays in the MCU's most epic narrative yet.
