The Persona VS card game is releasing in December and will feature Persona summoning and fusion. The Persona games have been a niche series in the past, itself a spin-off of the Megami Tensei franchise. But the release of Persona 5 in 2016 arguably introduced the series to a much wider audience. The critical acclaim and massive success that Persona 5 received even led to not only a re-released version with additional content in Persona 5: Royal but also two spin-off titles.

The Persona franchise is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and developer Atlus previously revealed that it will be making several announcements until the end of the year. While most of the announcements from Atlus so far have been focused on the Japanese market, including the streaming availability of previous Persona anime and the live stage adaptations of Persona 5, two live Persona-themed performances, and the release of new merch. More announcements regarding the Persona 25th anniversary are anticipated by fans of the series.

Japanese physical game company Banso, in partnership with Atlus, has announced Persona VS, a cross-over physical card game that features characters and Personas from three of the series’ most recent titles. Namely, Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5. The card game, which will come in a box set scheduled for release in Japan sometime in December 2021, is designed for two players with an estimated playtime of 15 minutes. The two players will start the game by each choosing one of the three protagonists of the three featured Persona titles. Persona or partner character cards can then be summoned, with each one featuring its own set of capabilities.

The Persona VS box set will come with three pre-made decks based on the trio of Persona games. It is currently up for preorder on the Banso web store at an SRP of 2,970 Yen (around ~$27) but those who preorder the set by October 19, 2021, will get a 10% discount, bringing its price down to just 2,673 Yen (around ~$24). It’s unclear whether the game will get an English localization and release in the future.

If Persona VS does eventually make its way to other territories outside of Japan, it could be another way for those who have only played Persona 5 and its spin-offs to become curious about the previous games in the series. If that turns out to be the case then those people already have the opportunity to play Persona 4 Golden, the expanded version of the original game, as it was remastered and released on PC just last year. The success of Persona 4 Golden’s release on PC may even lead to Atlus doing the same for Persona 3, the third featured title in Persona VS.

A physical card game may not be what many were expecting Atlus to announce as part of the Persona franchise’s 25th anniversary celebrations. However, Persona VS is definitely still an interesting game. Hopefully, it gets localized for English audiences and released outside of Japan as well. There’s still hope for a new Persona video game though as Atlus still has several announcements planned for the rest of the year.
