Persona 5 Royal is a turn-based JRPG that takes players through a neon-soaked Tokyo and characters' psyches by combating enemies through various methods, including showtime attacks. There's a lot to unravel with Persona 5 Royal's combat system but once players figure out how everything connects, the combat will feel more accessible.
In order to unlock showtime attacks in Persona 5 Royal, players need to discover them by playing the main story. The first time players will unlock a showtime attack is through Morgana explaining the mechanic at Kaneshiro's Palace by using the Orthrus, early in the game. Showtime attacks deal "Almighty Damage" and can be used on any enemy, including Persona 5 Royal's bosses. These moves can only be utilized during specific moments during combat:
- One of the enemies is critically injured during the battle.
- Shadow has been weakened.
- A Baton Pass is given to a member of the party.
- A character within the party has 50% health, or lower.
- An ally within the party has been downed.
- Protagonist has been downed.
The animations with these attacks, although spectacular, can differ in accordance to which characters are using them. In order to use them, players will see a 'button prompt' in the middle of the screen. All players need to do in order to launch the attack is to touch the corresponding button. Much like Persona 5 Royal's personas, showtime attacks vary in damage depending on the pairing of specific characters, but do not consume SP or HP. Players are encouraged to experiment with different characters and different enemies to find out which are the most effective for them.
