Video game developer and publisher Atlus has been hard at work crafting the Persona 5 franchise with mysterious projects and now Persona 5: The Animation will receive a new anime special slated for March. This news comes after fans were treated to “Dark Sun…”, an hour-long special that aired on December 30, 2018.

Atlus has been quite busy with projects related to Persona 5 recently. 2018 saw the release of the rhythm game Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, a crossover with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the appearance of the cast in Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. On top of all that, Persona 5: The Animation premiered in 2018, adapting the game's story into a 26-episode anime series by CloverWorks studios.

Atlus has been teasing the announcement of something new on its website throughout December in the lead up to the release of "Dark Sun...". A teaser has now released for something called P5R. The moniker presumably stands for Persona 5 R, but what exactly that R might stand for remains a mystery, along with the exact nature of the announcement. The trailer has a PlayStation logo attached, so it’s a safe to assume PlayStation hardware or services will be involved in the P5R project. We also know that the domain P5R.jp has been scooped up by the company, and it seems to be indicating that more information will be coming in March. Conveniently, that just so happens to be the month that Atlus releases “Stars and Ours”, the second anime special that constitutes the second half of the series’ epilogue.

Persona 5: The Animation was developed by CloverWorks, formerly A-Pictures. The studio is known for its work on series like Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online, Erased, Your Lie in April, and many more highly acclaimed projects. They have been attached to working on Persona’s animated adaptations the series has seen over the years as well as the games themselves, and "Stars and Ours" would be the last part of their adaptation of Persona 5... or would it?

Armed with that information, the final special and P5R could very well be related. “Stars and Ours” will cover the final events of Persona 5, meaning that the adaptation should be at an end. However, that also means everything would be primed for a big Persona-related announcement. Perhaps a PlayStation 4 spinoff game or a story-related expansion? Maybe a second season of the anime that continues the story in some way beyond the game, moving the series into original territory? Whatever happens, something cool will be revealed in March.
