J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan Go Vigilante with 'Person of Interest' Video

CBS has posted a trailer for one of its most exciting new shows, J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan's Person of Interest - with plenty of plot and character details as well as some bone-crunching action thrown in for good measure.

For those unfamiliar with the project, Person of Interest teams the ubiquitous producer J.J. Abrams with screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, famous for penning his director brother's projects Memento, The Prestige and The Dark Knight. The series stars James Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ, The Prisoner) and Lost regular Michael Emerson.

The video featurette gives a first look, not only at the basic story for Person of Interest, but a glimpse behind the camera as well. Caviezel plays Reese, a former CIA agent turned drifter who wanders the streets of New York City. Wealthy do-gooder and generally creepy fellow Finch (Emerson) recruits him as an under-the-table operative for crime prevention.

The method behind Finch's madness is an interesting one: he uses high-tech surveillance and computer algorithms to automatically detect upcoming crimes and their perpetrators. The almost-real technique is basically a more feasible version of Pre-Crime from Minority Report (or for the more literate members of our readership, a lot like the Darknet operations in Daniel Suarez's Daemon and Freedom (TM)).

Check out the new Person of Interest video below:

It's hard not to see a bit of Batman in Caviezel's Reese, with his clandestine movements and bad-guy busting - which, in theory, makes Emerson a more shadowy version of Lucius Fox or Alfred. But this crime-fighter isn't above a little bloodshed, employing flash bombs, grenade launchers and good old-fashioned guns to get the job done.

Abrams notes:

"There's a sort of thematic mood parallel between The Dark Knight and this series. And that idea of having people who are very much human, who are very real, and yet at the same time are doing things that without question are heroic. That was a very exciting prospect."

It's good to see Caviezel, a talented actor somewhat stymied by his most famous religious role, pick up another regular gig. Not to mention, a big-budget (as well as action-packed) network crime show should be music to the ears of 24 fans, who have been largely unsatiated for a year now, and the inclusion of vigilante themes as well as high-tech wizardry could be a big hit with the superhero crowd.

Person of Interest is scheduled for a fall debut on CBS.
