At first sight, it might seem like the Game of Thrones and Pokémon franchises don't have a lot of things in common. The first is a ruthless and often cruel tale of ambition and power set against a medieval-like fantasy world; on the other hand, the latter is a wholesome and addictive franchise that famously steers away from any challenging or overly complex narrative.

However, despite their pronounced differences, it isn't hard to build a bridge between them. In fact, several Pokémon would fit the GOT universe rather nicely, enhancing the already bloody fight between the noble houses of Westeros and raising the stakes even higher.

Froslass

Froslass has its arms spread in the Pokemon anime

Introduced in Generation VI as an exclusive evolution for a female Snorunt, Froslass is one of the scariest Ghost-type Pokémon around. Several dex entries mention how these Pokémon enjoy feasting on frozen souls, taking handsome men back into their layer in the mountains.

Froslass draws inspiration from a famous yokai in Japanese culture, the Yuki-onna. Its status as a literal frozen ghost would make it an ideal companion to Thrones' big bads, the White Walkers. Froslass would be faithful companions to the army of the dead, willingly helping them take over Westeros to create a perpetual winter.

Tentacruel

Any Pokémon with the word "cruel" on its name would be a perfect addition to Westeros. However, Tentacruel isn't precisely evil, although it does have a somewhat negative reputation throughout the Pokémon world. Tentacruel draws inspiration from monsters and alien creatures that became famous during the height of B-movies in the 1950s.

In the world of Game of Thrones, Tentacruel would have a close association with House Greyjoy. This Pokémon inhabits nearly every ocean in the Pokémon world, and other aquatic mons fear it. The overly ambitious House Greyjoy would identify with Tenacruel's maritime domain, claiming it as its house sigil.

Delphox

Delphox looks on disapprovingly from the Pokemon anime series.

The night is dark and full of terrors, or so the saying goes. The Red Priestesses of the faith of R'hllor are among Thrones' most infamous characters, known for their fanatical approach to their religion. The show's most notable Red Priest, Melisandre, would surely welcome a Pokémon companion to support her preaching campaigns.

The Pokémon franchise has no shortage of powerful Fire-types, but Delphox would be the best choice to accompany the Red Priestesses. Not only is its design reminiscent of the priestesses' red garnets, but its fire and psychic powers would also come in handy for the faith's practices. Melisandre wouldn't shy away from incinerating her enemies with Delphox's Flamethrower!

Roserade

Roserade crosses an obstacle on a beam in the Pokémon anime.

"Growing strong." Those are House Tyrell's words, and they live by them. Thanks to their vast army and resources, the Tyrells are a force to reckon with within the world of GOT. They are also somewhat famous, or perhaps infamous, for their hedonistic approach to life. Above all, some Westerosi noble houses consider them "delicate," thanks to their sigil, a beautiful golden rose.

However, a rose can be pretty deadly. Roserade, a dual Grass/Poison-type introduced in Generation IV, is among the strongest Pokémon from the Sinnoh region and a staple of many players' teams. Beautiful but deadly, Roserade would punish all those who dared oppose the Tyrells, becoming the Queen of Thorns' ultimate weapon.

Wyrdeer

The highly-anticipated and possibly game-changing Pokémon Legends: Arceus will introduce several new forms and regional evolutions, injecting some much-needed life into a few of the franchise's most forgettable Pokémon. Stantler, an otherwise forgettable Normal-type from Gen II, received a new evolution, Wyrdeer, a mighty-looking Normal-Psychic Pokémon that will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the game.

Although it seems more reindeer than stag, Wyrdeer would still fit the proud House of Baratheon. The Lords of the Storm's End would happily welcome this intimidating Pokémon into their ranks, using its size and psychic powers as a way to further increase their dominance over the Stormlands.

Pyroar

A Pyroar looking over his pride in the Pokémon anime

Generation VI might be divisive among the fan community, but their Pokémon designs are top-notch. Pyroar, a dual-Fire/Normal-type, is one of Kalos' most awe-inspiring Pokémon. It obviously draws inspiration from lions, making it the ideal choice for one of Thrones' most renowned families.

The Lions of the Rock are proud, ambitious, and ruthless; they will kill whoever steps in their way to ensure their legacy. In many ways, Cersei was Game of Thrones' ultimate villain, and fans can only imagine the damage she would cause with a mighty Pyroar by her side. She did want those elephants, after all, but a fire-breathing lion would be even better.

Salamence

Salamence might be the dragoniest dragon in the Pokémon franchise. As one of the Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon in the Hoenn region, Salamence is already mighty enough. However, the franchise made it even better by giving it a Mega Evolution in Gen VI, turning this beast into a full-on juggernaut.

The Mother of Dragons would welcome any addition into her draconic family, and as soon as she set eyes on Salamence, it would be love at first sight. Salamence is not a Fire-type, but it does learn Flamethrower by leveling up, making this a match made in dragon heaven.

Kyurem

A close-up of Kyurem's dace in the Pokémon anime

As the only Dragon/Ice Pokémon in the franchise, Kyurem already has a place of honor. Unovan myths claim it came from outer space inside a meteor. The inhabitants of the small Lacunosa Town built a barrier to keep the terrifying monster out, although theirs isn't made of ice and magic, unlike the wall from Game of Thrones that separates the North from the Land of Always Winter.

GOT already had an ice dragon, so why shouldn't it have two? The Night King would be unstoppable with Kyurem by its side, and while the Pokémon isn't evil per se, it wouldn't pass the opportunity of spreading his cold all over the world.

Zacian & Zamazenta

The Legendary Pokémon from Galar and game mascots from Pokémon Sword & Shield are the goodest of boys. They are regal, steadfast, and unstoppable, two of the most heroic Pokémon in the franchise. Zacian and Zamazenta draw inspiration from the legend of King Arthur, but their physique mostly resembles a wolf's, making their place in the GOT universe clear as day.

The Starks are the de-facto protagonists of A Song of Ice and Fire. They are also the most conventional heroes out of the series' main characters, so Zacian and Zamazenta wouldn't hesitate to aid them in their noble quest to defend Westeros from the army of the dead.

Reshiram

Generation V is arguably the most daring and thought-provoking in the Pokémon franchise. It has an intricate and intriguing backstory, and many fans think Unova's lore would make for an excellent next entry in the Pokémon Legends series.

Reshiram, the dual-type Dragon/Fire Legendary Pokémon, is a perfect fit for the Thrones universe. It would pair up with Daenerys, becoming her primary weapon in battle. Indeed, her three dragons would bow before the mighty Reshiram, who would become synonymous with the Breaker of Chains' power and dominance.
