Microsoft dropped a bombshell trailer to help kick off the early minutes of The Game Awards 2020, revealing Perfect Dark as the first game coming from the The Initiative, the Xbox Game studio that first formed in Santa Monica two years ago. The Initiative is famous for how it was sold to consumers, with Microsoft stating that it is a "AAAA" studio - essentially, one that will make even bigger, more expensive blockbusters than the ones fans might expect even from the traditional AAA label.

For those unfamiliar with Perfect Dark, the original game, developed by Rare and released in 2000, is considered to be one of the most important first-person shooters ever made in its era, and the blueprint for many tropes that still exist within the genre today. The IP has been largely dormant since then, however, and has frequently been discussed as one of the properties that most needs a revival.

That revival is coming from Xbox Game studio The Initiative, which revealed a first-ever look at Perfect Dark for Xbox during The Game Awards 2020. The trailer doesn't give fans much to go on, but it's a gorgeous look at a world that appears heavily influenced by concerns over ecological impact, the control of corporations over humanity, and leading a resistance against elements of that corporate takeover that have become inhumane or unnatural. The game also very briefly teases the appearance of agent Joanna Dark, the protagonist of the original Perfect Dark and something of a legend to those who feel the game has influenced the industry significantly. Here's a look at the trailer that aired:

Xbox also accompanied the game's announcement with a blog post, stating that Perfect Dark will deliver "a secret agent thriller" set in a world that's not that far off from where humanity currently sits in real life. The team at The Initiative is also detailed a little more in the blog post, with Microsoft hyping up the combination of storytellers, world-builders, and all-around talented game creators that have assembled under the roof of the Xbox Game studio.

While it's a tantalizing look at a game that's sure to generate a lot of buzz, Perfect Dark from The Initiative is still very much an unknown quantity. The trailer showed off some pretty locations and the kind of graphical prowess one might expect from a current-gen title, but nothing about the game has been confirmed outside of its existence. Fans will certainly be looking forward to more details though, and Perfect Dark could be a huge selling point for the Xbox brand moving forward.
