Walker Scobell, star of the upcoming Percy Jackson television series, details some interesting stunt training he underwent to prepare for his role. Initially a book series written by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is one of the best-selling book series of all time, with over 180 million copies sold worldwide. The books were adapted into two films, The Lightning Thief in 2010 and Sea of Monsters in 2013. In 2020, Riordan announced that Disney+ would be producing a television adaptation of Percy Jackson, with the series set to premiere sometime in 2024.

Filming on the Percy Jackson series began in June, and set photos have revealed snippets of everything from the Camp Half-Blood cabins to the Capture the Flag armor. Riordan, who is an executive producer on the series, has also teased major moments from Percy Jackson's eight-episode season 1. Most recently, Riordan confirmed that the show was in the process of filming the scenes in the Lotus Hotel and Casino, a major location in the first Percy Jackson book. Other recent updates include the casting of Ares, Medusa, and Echidna. Though filming for the show is well underway, there are still more sneak peaks being revealed.

In an interview with EW, Scobell talks about some of the sword training he did to prepare for the role of Percy Jackson. Fans will know that Percy has a trusty sword that becomes his go-to weapon, meaning Scoebll really needed to prepare. However, his methods were rather unique. Read Scobell's comment below:

"One of the training for the stunts was playing ping pong with swords. It was surprisingly not as hard as I thought it was going to be."

Early Percy Jackson Updates Have Been Very Promising

While sword fighting is a major part of demigod training at Camp Half-Blood, Scobell's sword training is a solid confirmation that Percy Jackson's iconic sword Riptide will be appearing in the series. Percy defeats many mythical monsters with Riptide in hand, making Scobell's sword training another indicator that the Percy Jackson television series will be a faithful screen adaptation. Even with only behind-the-scenes photos and a few trailer shots released, fans are praising the casting, set, and costume design of Percy Jackson for being more respectful the books than the infamous, not-Riordan-approved movies.

As of early October, Riordan confirmed that about 16 of The Lightning Thief's 22 chapters had already been filmed for the series. Though filming is speeding ahead, Riordan has said that he expects post-production work to take at least another year to be completed, meaning that there will still be a solid wait before the Percy Jackson show hits Disney+. However, if early updates and Riordan's stamp of approval are any indication, Percy Jackson is shaping up to be exactly what longtime fans have been waiting for.
