Recent rumors suggest a Percy Jackson TV show could be in the works but is it really happening? Award-winning writer Rick Riordan published his popular Percy Jackson book series between 2005 and 2009, penning five novels that spent a combined total of 522 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List. The fantasy series focuses on the adventures of its titular protagonist Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy who discovers he is none other than the son of Greek god Poseidon.

The first two books in Riordan’s series have already been adapted for the big screen. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief was released in 2010 and helmed by Harry Potter director Chris Columbus while sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters hit theaters in 2013 and was directed by Thor Freudenthal (Diary Of A Wimpy Kid). Although the budding franchise was hailed as the next Harry Potter, the two Percy Jackson films underperformed at the box office and many critics and fans felt they deviated too much from Riordan’s books. Star Logan Lerman was contractually obligated to make three Percy Jackson movies, but it seems plans for a third film have been abandoned.

Now, thanks to rumors the Percy Jackson books could find a new lease of life on TV, fans are hoping they’ll see a superior adaptation soon. Here’s what we know about a potential Percy Jackson TV series.

The Percy Jackson TV Show Rumors Started In 2019

In late 2019 entertainment site We Got This Covered published a series of reports stating a reliable source informed them a Percy Jackson TV series was in the works. The site reported the show would be a complete reboot that ignored the earlier Percy Jackson movies. As the films were produced by 20th Century Fox - which is now owned by Disney - it was also speculated the Percy Jackson TV series would air on the House of Mouse’s new streaming service Disney+.

Percy Jackson Creator Rick Riordan Had A Disney Meeting

As yet, there’s been no official confirmation a Percy Jackson TV series is definitely happening but a few tweets from Rick Riordan in mid-December 2019 certainly suggested the possibility. In one tweet, Riordan said he was in Los Angeles meeting with the powers-that-be to convince them a Percy Jackson reboot should happen while in a later tweet he stated:

“Had some good meetings at Disney today. Way too early to know what if anything might happen, but I will keep at it!”

While it’s still early days, Riordan’s meetings with Disney are a good sign that some sort of Percy Jackson reboot could happen in the not-too-distant future.

There Are Plenty Of Percy Jackson Books To Adapt

The Percy Jackson film franchise may have only adapted the first two books (The Lightning Thief and The Sea Of Monsters), but there are three more novels – The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, The Last Olympian – ripe for adaptation. Riordan has also penned two spin-offs set in the same world as Percy Jackson titled The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo. That means there’s plenty of material for Disney to adapt for a Percy Jackson TV series that could potentially span several seasons.

More to the point, with Amazon developing a TV adaptation of Lord Of The Rings and Netflix producing a series of Chronicles Of Narnia-based projects, a Percy Jackson TV series could be just the fantasy show Disney+ needs to keep up with its rivals.
