The Disney+ Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is set to premiere sometime in 2023, and recent cast additions were announced on June 2 with the most well-known cast addition being popular comedy actress Megan Mullaly. However, she is far from the only actor in the project that fans will recognize. This new cast of actors has a wide variety of past projects ranging from sitcoms (Will & Grace) to sci-fi adventure (The Adam Project) to horror (NOS4A2) - some of which may have striking similarities with the upcoming project.

Walker Scobell - The Adam Project (2022)

Streaming on Netflix

Ryan Reynolds and Walker Scobell in The Adam Project

Scobell plays Percy Jackson in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Although Scobell has only one previously released project, he has already had a starring role in the sci-fi action adventure Netflix movie The Adam Project as Young Adam. The Adam Project is about Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds), a time-traveling fighter pilot who travels back to 2022 to team up with his past self (Scobell) to save the future.

Scobell convincingly plays a younger version of Reynold's Big Adam while still showing the contrast between them at two different ages. Scobell is adept at playing the outcast bullied Young Adam, as well as playing the mourning for his recently deceased father. While there are genuinely good performances by Scobell and Reynolds, the film can often be confusing and bogged down in places.

Leah Jeffries - Empire (2015-2016)

Streaming on Hulu

Leah Jeffries on Empire

Jeffries plays Annabeth Chase in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Although young she already has several credits including recurring parts in two series.  One of the series she took part in was season one of Empire as Lola Lyon, the daughter of Olivia Lyon. Empire (which originally aired on Fox) is a drama about Lucious (Terrence Howard), hip-hop mogul diagnosed with ALS, who must decide which one of his three sons will take over his company after his death. At the same time, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) - his ex-wife, is back from prison and wants to scheme to get back what belonged to her.

Jeffries played Lola Lyon when she was very young but it was still impressive that she was able to play a recurring role at such a young age. She had several touching scenes with Jamal who was thought to be her birth father. In one such scene, Jamal teaches Lola how to sing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" to calm her after she says she is scared of monsters. Although Jeffries had only a small role in Season One she plays an important part in her storyline. Empire is an engaging if melodramatic night time soap filled with music and complicated plots.

Aryan Simhadri - Just Roll With It (2019-2020)

Streaming on Disney+

Aryan Simhadri in Just Roll With It

Simhadri plays Grover Underwood in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Simhadri has had a variety of roles in TV and film, both live-action and animated. One of his recurring live-action roles includes Norvin Schnuckle in Just Roll With It, which originally aired on the Disney Channel. The series was a cross between a sitcom about a newly blended family and improv comedy where the audience got to participate by choosing the direction of the scenes.

Simhadri's Norvin was an antagonist on the series who was a very boring student but revealed to be secretly evil. The fact that he was able to play a villain and do improv comedy at such a young age shows Simhadri's range as an actor. While the series only lasted two seasons it was a show with a unique concept that blended together two different formats, improv and the sitcom with creative gags and unpredictability.

Virginia Kull - NOS4A2 (2019-2020)

Streaming on Hulu

Linda McQueen in Nos4a2

Kull plays Percy's mother Sally Jackson in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Kull has had a varied career with multiple recurring appearances in series. One series she made an appearance in was NOS4A2 where she played Linda McQueen. NOS4A2 (which originally aired on AMC)based on the Joe Hill novel, is about Vic McQueen, a young woman with the power to open portals to find lost objects. In one portal she comes across Charlie Manx, an immortal who eats the souls of children, and he becomes her enemy.

Kull as Linda McQueen is similar to Sally Jackson in that they are both protective mothers whose offspring have supernatural powers. Although much darker and more adult than Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Kull being in NOS4A2 shows that she is comfortable doing genre work. While it doesn't live up to the original book it's based on, it still has engaging tension and building sense of dread.  It's worthwhile viewing to see Kull in a slightly similar role to Sally Jackson.

Jason Mantzoukas - Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2016-2021)

Streaming on Hulu

Pimento standing in front of a board of images in Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Mantzoukas plays Dionysus, the grumpy and sarcastic camp counselor at Camp Half Blood in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Mantzoukas has had many recurring roles both in live-action and animation. One notable part was Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where he played Adrian Pimento. Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a comedy crime series starring Andy Samberg as Det. Jake Peralta and his unique coworkers at NYPD's 99th Precinct.

Mantzoukas as Adrian Pimento was a former detective who went undercover with the mob for 12 years, resulting in an unstable personality. This role was portrayed for black comedy and his first appearance in "Adrian Pimento" was one of the darkest episodes in Brooklyn Nine-Nine up until that point. That Mantzoukas was able to play such a dark role for comedy shows how much range he has. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an unusual cop show in that it focuses on the characters and their humor more than the situations or crimes themselves.

Glynn Turman - Fargo (2020)

Streaming on Hulu

Doctor Senator

Turman plays Mr. Brunner, Percy's Latin teacher who is secretly Chiron, a centaur. He trains heroes and mentors Percy in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Turman has had a long and varied career with many different roles in TV and film. One recent standout role he played was Doctor Senator in Fargo. Fargo is an anthology with murder and other crimes in Minnesota that all are mysteriously linked to Fargo, North Dakota.

Turman's Doctor Senator is a complex character, a once honest attorney who turned to organized crime after being the receiving end of racist mocking. Turman's ability to play such a multilayered character shows how truly capable he is as an actor. As an anthology, Fargo has a different story every season, which means there is a new mystery and characters. This keeps the show interesting and engaging.

Timm Sharp - Briarpatch (2019-2020)

Streaming on Amazon Prime

Timm Sharp in Briarpatch

Sharp plays Gabe Ugliano, Sally's brash and unlikable husband and Percy's stepfather. Sharp has had many appearances in different series over the years. One featured role he played was Harold Snow in Briarpatch. Briarpatch is about a senator's aid, Allegra Dill (Rosario Dawson), who investigates her sister's death by car bomb in her hometown of San Bonifacio, Texas.

Sharp's Harold in Briarpatch is similar in a way to Gabe in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Harold is a snitch and an unlikeable jerk. While the roles of Harold and Gabe are different, they are both unpleasant characters. Sharp's performance as Harold could give an idea of the kind of performance he might give as Gabe. Briarpatch is an all-around well-written and performed noir with touches of black comedy.

Megan Mullally - Will & Grace (1998-2020)

Streaming on Hulu

Karen Walker lifts a glass of martini in Will and Grace

Mullally plays Mrs. Dodds, Percy's very strict math teacher who is actually Alecto, one of the furies. She works for Hades, who rules the Underworld. Mullally has had a long and varied career in both live-action and animation. One of her most well-known roles is Karen Walker in Will & Grace. Will & Grace is about lawyer Will (Eric McCormack) and interior designer Grace (Debra Messing) who are best friends living together in New York City.

Karen is the opposite of Mrs. Dodds in terms of character. Where Mrs. Dodds is strict and a villain, Karen is an over-the-top wealthy socialite and friend to the rest of the main characters. This contrast between parts really shows Mullally's range as an actress. While some aspects of Will & Grace are somewhat dated, the show still was an important step forward in terms of representation as well as being genuinely funny in places.
