Alexandra Daddario tweets out her support for Leah Jeffries playing Annabeth in the upcoming Percy Jackson and the Olympians tv series. Daddario previously played the role in the 2010 film adaptation of the book series, as well as in its 2013 follow-up. A new television series was announced to air on Disney+, with the first season adapting the first novel of the book series.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians follows the titular Percy as he discovers the existence of Greek gods and monsters in the modern era. The first novel, The Lightning Thief, sees him travel across the United States with his friends Annabeth and Grover to save his mother. Percy Jackson and the Olympians will have an eight-episode first season, covering the events of the first book, with subsequent seasons presumably covering the other four books from the initial series. Series author Rick Riordan is expected to have a more active role in the process and will be co-writing the series' pilot episode after being shut out of the movies' production.

In a tweet, Daddario expresses her support for Jeffries taking on the role that Daddario played in 2010. This could be in response to the backlash and online harassment Jeffries has been experiencing since her casting announcement. Jeffries herself has responded to the harassment, saying it hasn't bothered her and how excited she is to start production. See Daddario's tweet below:

Along with Jeffries, The Adam Project star Walker Scobell and Aryan Simhadri have been cast as Percy and Grover respectively. Percy Jackson and the Olympians have opted to cast younger actors in contrast to the older actors from the film adaptations, to allow them to grow along with the characters. Filming is scheduled to begin in June 2022 in Vancouver, Canada.

It's almost comically predictable how common online backlash and harassment have become whenever a new adaptation is announced, and it's smart for Jeffries to dismiss the noise and focus on playing a character beloved by so many. Riordan's books have inspired countless young adults to experience the imagination and wonder that comes with good-natured storytelling, and it hasn't yet had a worthy adaptation. Though it's still a long way off, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is already showing a better understanding of its source material than the films and with the support of people like Daddario and strong performances from its new leads, it could shape up to be something worthy of the gods.
