The People Just Do Nothing movie is set to film in Japan and the UK. The BBC series found monstrous success in the United Kingdom upon its release in 2014, and was eventually released globally on Netflix.
For the uninitiated, People Just Do Nothing follows a crew of dim-witted wannabe musicians, whose main source of exposure comes from their pirate radio station, Kurupt FM. Lead by the vaguely ambitious but utterly misguided MC Grindah, the mockumentary series saw the likes of Grindah, his DJ, Beats, their scam artist of a manager Chabuddy G, and an assortment of associates continuously strive for success, the likes of which they felt was just around the corner. The series ran until 2018, when Kurupt FM were forced to disband, after Grindah and his wife Miche were evicted from their West London apartment and could only find affordable housing on the very distant city outskirts. Ever since the end of the acclaimed series, there has been talk of the crew reuniting for a potential film, but until now, nothing solid had materialised.
Official confirmation of a People Just Do Nothing film now comes to us courtesy of British Comedy Guide. The upcoming film will reportedly take place in the UK as well as Japan and catches up with Grindah and the others at a time when things have been relatively quiet for Kurupt FM. But when the boys get word that one of their songs has been used in a Japanese game show and has since become a hit, a trip to Tokyo is immediately planned, with everyone back in their respective Kurupt FM roles once more. An official break down of the film’s plot, as described by the film’s producers, is as follows:
"Since the end of their pirate radio station, life has been quiet for the Kurupt FM boys, but everything is about to change. News reaches them that one of their songs has been used on a popular game show in Japan. They've made it! Their music is reaching hundreds of thousands of people! It's finally time for them to enjoy the fame and fortune that they've always known they deserved. Chabuddy G steps excitedly back into his management role as Grindah, Beats, Steves and Decoy begin their journey to international stardom... But is Japan really ready for Kurupt FM?"
Also offering input on the new move for Kurupt FM is the self proclaimed "Best MC in The Galaxy" himself, MC Grindah, who had the following to say: "Japan is the most advanced city in the world so it makes perfect sense that they would recognise our lyrical talent. We can't wait to go over there and completely destroy the music scene. In a good way."
Last but not least, Kurupt’s manager, Chabuddy G, added his own insight on the matter: “You know me, I can sell anything mate. Ice to an Eskimo, halal meat to a racist vegan... selling garage music to Japan is water off a duck’s beak, mate."
The film is currently aiming for an August 2020 release date across Ireland and the UK, with no information available as of this writing with regard to North American release dates. Whether or not Netflix could possibly handle the North American release is also not mentioned, though it does seem like a suitable approach given the fact that the series was far more popular in the UK than anywhere else.
Filming in Japan is definitely a huge move for People Just Do Nothing as well as the BBC, and the end results will likely find tremendous success. While hit comedy series The Inbetweeners conquered the UK box office twice over the past 10 years, People Just Do Nothing seems to be the most capable candidate to challenge that supremacy. It’s a tremendous goal to strive for, but not impossible in the least.
