A new teaser trailer for Pennyworth season 3 reveals the show has adopted a new, Batman-centric subtitle tying the show to its franchise roots. Starring Jack Bannon as a young Alfred Pennyworth, the show explores the adventures the former SAS soldier before he became the Wayne family butler and the man responsible for raising an orphaned Bruce Wayne. Set in an alternate version of 1960s London, the show finds the enterprising Alfred caught up in a struggle against the Raven Society, a fascist organization which plunges England into a brutal civil war.

After airing its first two seasons on Epix, season 3 is now set to move across to HBO Max instead. Set five years after the events of season 2, the show will now pick up after the civil war has ended, and the world finds itself facing a new era of superheroes and supervillains. Now, HBO Max releases a new Pennyworth season 3 teaser trailer, and while it is sparse on details, it does offer a new surprise in the form of the recently added subtitle: “The Origins of Batman’s Butler.” Check out the new trailer below:

While the addition of this subtitle might seem superfluous to those familiar with Batman lore, it does directly address some concerns by fans raised over the surprise twist featured in the season 2 finale. While Martha Kane was pregnant throughout the last season with Thomas Wayne’s child, the series finale managed to pull the rug out from audience’s feet by diverging from Batman canon and revealing the baby as a girl - thereby hinting at the existence of a never-before-seen older sibling of Bruce Wayne. By adding this subtitle in, it reassures fans that, despite the show’s willingness to divert from established canon, it still intends to connect to the broader Batman legacy and will not overlook Bruce altogether. Pennyworth: The Origins of Batman’s Butler is set to debut on HBO Max this October.
