A former writer for The Colbert Report had some fun with Pennywise the Dancing Clown from Stephen King’s IT, at the expense of his sister’s engagement photos. Without question, IT is one of the biggest sensations to hit movie theaters this year, obliterating records in its first weekend of release of September by becoming the biggest opener for a horror film of all time. Shortly thereafter, it notched the record for the highest-grossing Stephen King movie and highest-grossing R-rated horror film ever.

A mere month after its release, IT reached another box office landmark by becoming the first horror film to pass $300 million at the domestic box office (and only the fourth R-rated film ever to accomplish that feat), and passed the $600 million at the global box office in the same weekend. With a running tally of more than $651 million at the global box office after this weekend, it’s pretty safe to say that Pennywise has been seen everywhere, even in places you wouldn’t suspect.

Jesse McLaren, a BuzzFeed writer and former writer for Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, decided it would be fun to clown around with his sister and future brother-in-law’s engagement photos. Asked by his sister to shoot photos for the memorable occasion, McLaren employed a bit of some Photoshop handiwork and discreetly inserted Pennywise into every image. See some examples in a tweet posted by McLaren below:

McLaren says that as of the posting of the tweet, his sister still hasn’t noticed the creepy clown lurking in various places in the photos. The writer/photographer clearly got creative by incorporating both the Tim Curry and Bill Skarsgård versions of Pennywise; whether inserting fuzzy shots of the demented character in the background, or at least in one case, peering (a la the new film’s version of the opening sewer scene) through a nearby window.

It’s fun to see fans are having fun with Pennywise through various means on social media, bringing a bit of levity to an otherwise horrifying character. One fan created a video featuring Pennywise dancing to about any song, while another was inspired to create a mash-up trailer that pitted Skarsgård’s Pennywise against Ben Affleck’s Batman.

As for McLaren’s photos, at least he’ll be able to erase the remnants of Pennywise to keep his sister happy. Hopefully he’s thinking ahead, though, and re-insert the Dancing Clown back into the photos to help the couple celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary.
