Peggy Carter is finally becoming Captain America—at least in the alternate reality of Exiles. Peggy Carter, one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D. and one of the few people to win Steve Rogers' heart, has always been a fan-favorite. But her status skyrocketed when Hayley Atwell nailed the role in Captain America: The First Avengers. Since then, she's had her own One-Shot, led the Agent Carter TV series for two seasons, and voiced Peggy in Avengers Assemble. She's also appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., becoming one of the key actors of the MCU in the process.

There's no telling what the future holds for Peggy and Atwell when it comes to the MCU, but there's a lot of options. Though she passed in Captain America: Civil War, her decades of service with S.H.I.E.L.D. mean any period piece Marvel does could realistically feature her. Fans are avidly campaigning for Peggy Carter to join Captain Marvel, but the comics have likely set a new goal for Atwell die-hards.

Marvel released their May solicits this week and one cover jumps out: Exiles #3. Written by Saladin Ahmed (Black Bolt), the new take on Exiles has gotten plenty of press thanks to characters like cartoon Wolverine, future Kamala Khan, and Tessa Thompson's version of Valkyrie joining the team. But the third issue will finally introduce a version of Peggy Carter who became Captain America.

With art by Dave Marquez, the cover for Exiles #3 unites Blink and cartoon Wolverine with Captain Carter. Despite the character's long history and Marvel's many parallel universe, this is actually the first time Peggy has taken on Cap's mantle in the comics. Of course, die-hard Marvel fans will know Captain Carter predates this book.

Back in 2016, Marvel celebrated the 75th anniversary of Captain America by introducing alternate takes on the character in a bunch of their mobile games. Future Fight received an alternate universe child of Steve and Peggy named Sharon Rogers who became a futuristic take on Captain America (and fought using a high-tech lance). Sharon Rogers is even getting a Funko, but she's yet to appear in the comics. Meanwhile, Puzzle Quest introduced Peggy Carter as Captain America, complete with a video explaining the character's history.

After Steve was assassinated before completely the Super Soldier Program, Peggy stepped up and became Captain America. The story's not far off from how Spider-Gwen was conceived, and she's gone on to dominate comics and other media for Marvel. Exiles borrows from the Puzzle Quest version of Captain Carter, using the same uniform Jae Tsai designed for the game. There's no telling what the full story of the character will be or if she'll stick around, but it's hard to imagine fans not being head over heels for Peggy 'Captain America' Carter when she debuts.
