Pearson Trailer: Suits Spinoff Series Puts Gina Torres In Political Hot Water

Gina Torres in Pearson USA

Gina Torres heads to Chicago as a political fixer in the first trailer for USA’s Suits spinoff series, Pearson. While the cabler is set to say goodbye to its long-running blue-sky legal drama after nine seasons, one of that show’s core characters is getting a new lease on life, with a brand-new drama that finds the disbarred lawyer Jessica Pearson leaving New York City legal world for the grayer skies of the Chicago political scene.

The change of scenery also brings about a welcome change in tone, as the new series looks to have a different sort of edge to it, one that is certainly on display in the new trailer. While murky, possibly underhanded dealings are nothing new for Suits creator Aaron Korsh, Pearson as though it will examine those ambiguities in a different way than its predecessor. That’s not to say the Suits M.O. of incredibly intelligent people getting things done through back-channeling and back-stabbing will go away. If anything, it’ll just be more a part of the show’s persona.

The first trailer, the release of which coincides with the Pearson panel being held at NBCUniversal portion of the 2019 winter Television Critics Association press tour, offers a solid glimpse into the new world that Jessica will be entering, and it quickly proves that she’s a force to be reckoned with no matter where she’s set up shop.

PEARSON centers around the world of recently disbarred NYC powerhouse lawyer Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) as she adjusts to down and dirty Chicago politics. Newly appointed as Chicago Mayor Bobby Novak’s (Morgan Spector) right hand fixer, Jessica is quickly embroiled in a crooked and dangerous new world where every action has far-reaching consequences. With her compulsion to win, Jessica is forced to reconcile her unstoppable drive with her desire to do the right thing – two things very much at odds.”

Pearson seems as though it will make another solid entry in the list of spinoffs that’ve gone on to be successes in their own right, joining the likes of Frasier and CBS All Access’ superb The Good Wife spinoff, The Good Fight. Interestingly, the latter two series also take place in Chicago, which is a nice break from the usual coastal settings of New York or Los Angeles.
