Over 33 million people have signed up for Peacock, according to parent company Comcast. The streaming service launched in July 2020 and was initially intended to launch alongside NBC’s coverage of the 2020 Summer Olympics before the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Peacock gives subscribers access to programming from networks like NBC, MSNBC, Syfy, USA Network alongside the various film divisions like DreamWorks Animation, Focus Features, Illumination Entertainment, and more.

While the rise of streaming services was inevitable, many have seen an accelerated increase since the COVID-19 pandemic. It has become a significant income source for various entertainment companies that find other avenues like theaters and theme parks unable to open. CBS All Access is rebranding as Paramount+ this year and will launch with the premiere of the exclusive film SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run. HBO Max saw a rise of 41 million users with the release of Wonder Woman 1984. Disney+ had gained over 86 million sign-ups since it launched in 2019. Now it appears that Peacock has premiered to a number that can put it on par with its competitors.

In a recent report by CNBC, Comcast has reported that Peacock hit 33 million sign-ups in 2020. The report notes that 11 million subscribers signed up in the fourth quarter, an increase from the 22 million accounted for at the end of the third quarter. This growth is before The Office, one of the most coveted pieces of entertainment in the streaming age, even hit the site.

What separates Peacock from the other streaming services is the tier system it offers subscribers. Subscribers can sign up for free access that gives them a limited amount of Peacock programming with ads. For $4.99, subscribers can get Peacock Premium, which provides them with the entire Peacock library with ads. Peacock Premium Plus is available for $9.99 and gives subscribers the whole catalog with no ads. While it is currently unknown how many of the 33 million subscribers are on the free ad-tier platform and how many have signed up for the two paid services, it is clear the various tiers have incentivized people to sign up and check out the service.

Comcast has been investing in Peacock throughout the last year. A recent deal with Hulu allows audiences to stream all eleven seasons of Modern Family on the site. They recently signed a deal with WWE to become the exclusive streaming service of the popular sport. New original programming coming in the form of popular series like Punky Brewster, Battlestar Galactica, and MacGruber. With The Office exclusively moving over to Peacock and the delayed Olympic Games scheduled for this year, the subscriber count is expected to increase even more.
