James Gunn suggests Peacemaker’s profane Aquaman rumor is most likely just that within DC Extended Universe canon. As a follow-up to The Suicide Squad, Gunn’s second DCEU project Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max earlier this year to critical and commercial acclaim. The series follows John Cena’s “douchey Captain America,” Christopher Smith, and Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) A.R.G.U.S. as they thwart an alien invasion via Project Butterfly. In addition to Cena, the cast includes Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stoma, Nhut Le, Chukwudi Iwuji, and Robert Patrick.

Peacemaker takes a handful of jabs at DC’s roster, including off-kilter jokes about Batman never killing the Joker and Superman’s poop fetish. Perhaps the most vicious barb sees Arthur Curry/Aquaman accused of having sexual relations with fish. Peacemaker’s finale seemed to cement both these rumors thanks to a cameo by actual members of the Justice League. Alongside the silhouettes of Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller made appearances as Aquaman and the Flash, respectively. When Peacemaker makes a crack about Aquaman’s love life, the latter says, “I’m so f—king sick of that rumor,” to which Flash replies, “It’s not a rumor.”

Gunn recently took to Twitter to discuss the nature of that Aquaman rumor. While replying to a fan who asked him how much hate mail he got for that joke, Gunn clarified that, even in the DCEU, you shouldn’t believe everything you read online. Check it out below:

The Snyder-Verse debacle and subsequent films indicated WB/DC Films often throws continuity to the wayside. Aside from Bloodsport being incarcerated for putting Superman in the ICU and the inclusion of Amanda Waller, The Suicide Squad felt like its own unique “Gunn-Verse” rather than an explicit part of the larger DCEU. The same can be said for Peacemaker as it utilizes its creator's comic book awareness and warmly sardonic voice. However, Peacemaker’s Justice League cameos have seemingly cemented both those projects as part of the mainline DCEU rather than outside of it ala Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Furthermore, they make TV-MA jokes like Aquaman and Green Arrow fetishes fair game in pretty much any series or movie.

It’s safe to say Warner Bros./DC Films’ precarious universe and past mistakes facilitated Gunn’s freedom in creating The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Thanks to his affectionate mockery of the genre, Peacemaker is the highest-rated DCEU project on Rotten Tomatoes. On top of that, the Aquaman joke has clearly taken on a life of its own as Momoa was even asked about it at the premiere of The Batman. In the past, Gunn revealed he has an extended version of the Aquaman joke where Barry Allen goes on for around 16 minutes about his co-worker having sex with fish. Suffice to say, everyone in the DCEU could be slandered in Peacemaker season 2.
