Freddie Stroma, who plays Vigilante in Peacemaker, got pranked when going to lunch with James Gunn and his fellow cast members. HBO Max’s DCEU series takes place after Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, picking up with Christopher Smith/Peacemaker after he betrayed members of Task Force X on Corto Maltese. In his eponymous series, John Cena’s “douchey Captain America” teams up with A.R.G.U.S. to thwart an alien invasion via Operation: Butterfly. In addition to Cena, the spinoff series’ cast includes Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Chukwudi Iwuji, Nhut Le, and Freddie Stoma.

Audiences were introduced to Peacemaker’s “best friend”—not Eagley— Adrian Chase/Vigilante in the series' pilot. The character was originally played by Chris Conrad. However, Gunn recast Stroma in the role after five episodes due to creative issues. As an enthusiastic foil, Vigilante is just as violent and, if not more so, than Peacemaker. When Peacemaker begins to struggle with all the murder and mayhem, Vigilante still very much enjoys his vocation, which is thanks in large part to ignorance (and a dash of sociopathy). Gunn himself has compared the character to The Office’s Michael Scott, who is “a dingus in so many ways but surprisingly good at his job.” He’s a hilarious, occasionally regrettable, usually valuable addition to the 11th Street Kids.

Gunn recently took to Twitter to share photos from a mini-Peacemaker reunion/lunch with Brooks, Holland, Stroma, and Stoma’s wife, actress Johanna Braddy. Brooks thought it would be funny to tell the waiter it was Stroma’s birthday, causing the employees to sing him "Happy Birthday." Check out the post below:

Whether it be on Silther, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, DC Films’ The Suicide Squad, or Peacemaker, Gunn tends to create work environments that spawn long-lasting personal and professional relationships. That being said, the writer/director even called up actor/director Elizabeth Banks to check it Stroma was an“a**hole" before casting him. Clearly, he’s not an “a**hole" and contributes to what is a beautiful dynamic. On top of that, his character has been well-received by audiences and critics alike.

Peacemaker dropped episode 8, “It’s Cow or Never,” last month, capping off an outlandish first season riddled with great music, silly dance moves, humor, and heart. Not only did the 11th Street Kids succeed in their mission, but Peacemaker rejected Goff’s seemingly altruistic offer and chose friendship over authoritative peace. As of now, Peacemaker is the DCEU’s best-reviewed project and has already been renewed for a second season.
