James Gunn celebrates Steve Agee’s birthday with photos from the sets of Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker. Agee has appeared in projects such as New Girl, Brightburn, The Flash, and the DC Universe’s animated Harley Quinn series. The actor and comedian is also a longtime collaborator of Gunn, making his DC Extended Universe debut in last year’s The Suicide Squad. On top of doing the motion capture for King Shark, Agee stars as John Economos—a role he recently reprised in season 1 of the HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker.
Warner Bros./DC Films’ spin-off follows John Cena’s Christopher Smith/Peacemaker after being recruited by Amanda Waller’s A.R.G.U.S. to "save the f----ing world" in The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scene. Throughout eight episodes, Economos—who Peacemaker not-so-affectionately calls “Dye Beard"—contributes to Project Butterflies in its attempts to thwart an alien invasion. In addition to Cena and Agee, the series stars Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stoma, Nhut Le, and Chukwudi Iwuji.
Saturday, February 26, Gunn took to social media to wish his longtime friend and collaborator, Agee, a happy 53rd birthday. Gunn’s post included behind-the-scenes images from Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 franchise and DC’s The Suicide Squad. Check it out below:

Peacemaker’s season 1 finale became available to HBO Max subscribers last week. Episode 8, “It’s Cow or Never,” sees Peacemaker and the team assault the barn where the butterflies are keeping their “cow”/food source and attempt to kill it before the aliens can teleport it to safety. Before they succeed in their mission, Economos is tasked with pretending to be a butterfly and placing Peacemaker’s sonic boom-equipped helmet in the basement of the barn. His cover is almost blown when the butterfly-controlled Detective Fitzgibbon asks him about his beard, which leads to an emotional monologue about his insecurities and lazy style choices. In many ways, the running “Dye Beard” gag epitomizes the brilliance of Peacemaker’s unique style, humor, and heart.
Peacemaker season 1 is the best-reviewed DCEU project on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% critics score. Gunn, Agee, and company will be returning for Peacemaker season 2, which was just renewed. As of right now, Gunn is working on the final installment in his Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Afterward, he will return to write and direct Peacemaker along with (presumably) other DCEU projects as he expands the Gunn-Verse, which is already filled with layered and lovable characters, not the least of which is Agee's rock-loving Economos.
