A new trailer has arrived for the upcoming HBO Max/DC Comics series PeacemakerPeacemaker will be a spin-off following the titular character, who was introduced into the DCEU in James Gunn's film The Suicide Squad, which premiered on August 6, 2021. Gunn also created the series, wrote the scripts for all 8 episodes, and directed at least 5 of them. The show will be premiering on January 13, 2022, having taken advantage of The Suicide Squad's COVID-19 related release delays to come out so quickly after its premiere.

John Cena will be reprising his role as Peacemaker, the weapons expert who is so loyal to his values that he will do anything to achieve them, becoming more or less a villain himself. He will be joined by his The Suicide Squad co-stars Steve Agee (as prison warden John Economos) and Jennifer Holland (as Amanda Waller's aide Emilia Harcourt). The main cast also includes Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Robert Patrick as Peacemaker's father, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, and Freddie Stroma as Vigilante.

As promised by James Gunn on his Twitter last week, HBO Max has dropped a brand new trailer for Peacemaker for the new year. The violent clip shows off the R-rated DCEU series and Cena's return as the antihero introduced in The Suicide Squad. In addition to showing off a couple of the show's villains, it also previews Gunn's signature raunchy humor that was on display in his previous DC effort. Check out the video below:

Peacemaker will follow the character's missions after the events of The Suicide Squad as well as explore his origins. Although details from the plot remain mostly under wraps, it is known that he will reluctantly team with the exuberant young Vigilante, whose real name is Adrian Chase. Chase works at a restaurant by day and fights crime by night and is even more violently devoted to his ideals than Peacemaker. The relationship they share seems very similar to the protegé/fan dynamic between Kate Bishop and Clint Barton on Marvel's Hawkeye.

More and more is revealed about the nature of Peacemaker as the promotional machine keeps churning as it approaches its premiere. By the looks of things, it will be keeping up the inimitable vein of ironic James Gunn humor that The Suicide Squad proudly displayed. Although it seems to be much more grounded in its action and less comic book extravagant than that film, it is certainly shaping up to potentially be a worthy successor to the project.
