James Gunn teases more DCEU spinoffs after Peacemaker. Though his most recent projects have been for the DC Extended Universe, the superhero auteur is best known for his Guardians of the Galaxy series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After being briefly fired from the production in 2018, Gunn is now hard at work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, set for release in 2023, as well as a Guardians-themed holiday special coming to Disney+ in 2022.

During his layoff from the MCU, Gunn made the jump to the DCEU for a soft-reboot of David Ayer's 2016 film, Suicide Squad. Before his R-rated revamp even hit theaters, Gunn started working on a spinoff series for HBO Max centered around John Cena's Peacemaker, a "douchey Captain America" who believes in achieving peace at any cost. The series releasing on January 13 will reunite Peacemaker with The Suicide Squad's John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), as well as debut several new characters, such as Freddie Stroma as the DC hero Vigilante.

Now, with only a month to go until Peacemaker debuts on HBO Max, Gunn hints that some more The Suicide Squad spinoffs might be on the way. In response to a fan inquiring about the possibility of more shows after Peacemaker, Gunn replied with a smirking emoji accompanied by a GIF of a mischievous raccoon cryptically captioned "he, he, he, he, he, he, he." While Gunn's GIF choice immediately brings to mind the Guardians of the Galaxy character voiced by Bradley Cooper, Rocket Raccoon, he was specifically asked about DC spinoffs, not Marvel. In the replies, Gunn even addressed the point that his post might be hinting at a Rocket series, saying "That would be a really weird The Suicide Squad spinoff." While there have been rumors in the past of a Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff centered around Rocket, nothing ever solidified, so that doesn't appear to be what Gunn is hinting at here.

Gunn recently confirmed he's developing another DC project beyond Peacemaker, and this post seems to suggest it is another spinoff of The Suicide Squad. In terms of what characters could be next in line for a solo outing, Gunn has expressed interest numerous times in a stand-alone project for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Whether or not these spinoff ideas ever come into fruition will likely hinge on the success of Peacemaker.
