A new behind-the-scenes image shows members of the Peacemaker cast on set. The upcoming HBO Max series from director James Gunn is a spinoff from his recent DC movie The Suicide Squad. The film, which premiered in the US in August 2021, depicted the return of a newly assembled Task Force X as they attempt to destroy a giant alien starfish called Starro. John Cena, who featured in the picture as the foul-mouthed anti-hero Peacemaker, joined the likes of Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis.

Focusing on Cena’s character, the new eight-episode spinoff show Peacemaker explores the anti-hero's life following the events of The Suicide Squad, and reveals more about his origin story. Gunn reportedly began developing Peacemaker during lockdown in 2020. HBO Max gave a straight to series order for the show later that year, with Gunn attached to direct five episodes and Jody Hill, Rosemary Rodriguez and Brad Anderson enlisted to helm a further three. Production on Peacemaker finally commenced in Vancouver in January of 2021, with Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, and Chukwudi Iwuji starring opposite Cena.

Following on from Peacemaker’s miraculous survival at the end of The Suicide Squad, the HBO Max show will see the character continue his bizarre pursuit for world peace, no matter how many people have to die to achieve it. Introducing a new and unusual DC ensemble, including Peacemaker’s misguided crime-fighting partner Vigilante, the show hopes to deliver fans a powerhouse of fun and chaos. With talks for a Peacemaker season 2 already underway, it appears both Gunn and HBO are optimistic that Peacemaker will provide a good time for viewers.

After the premiere of its new red-band trailer, fans should certainly expect to see a heap of Gunn's style of comedy. With his ever-growing record of highly comedic superhero pictures, it seems unlikely that Gunn or the studio will seek to stray away from his popular MO as they venture into the realm of television. With other adaptations rumoured to be in the works, Peacemaker’s reception on January 13 is likely to be closely scrutinised, and may help to determine the future of several other DC projects.
