Director James Gunn confirmed that filming has wrapped on his upcoming HBO Max series Peacemaker. John Cena's helmeted antihero/villain will first make his debut in Gunn's upcoming DCEU feature The Suicide Squad, a hybrid sequel-reboot to 2016's David Ayer film. Cena will be one of the many villains joining Task Force X in the new film, but the character will take center stage in his series. Peacemaker is slated to debut in early 2022 and it will take place before the events of The Suicide Squad, serving as an origin story of sorts for Cena's character.

In addition to Cena, Peacemaker stars Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), Steve Agee (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Robert Patrick, and Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter). Gunn recently confirmed the list of directors for Peacemaker and, of the eight-episode first season, the director will helm five of them. Three other directors have come onboard to handle the remaining episodes. In addition to directing, Gunn served as the primary writer for the series and although he has been pretty open about the production process of Peacemaker, the plot of the series remains largely under wraps.

Now, Gunn took to Twitter to announce that filming has wrapped on Peacemaker. He noted that 11 months ago he brought a "vague pitch" to HBO Max that would eventually become the series. The director also said that production took place over 131 days before thanking the cast and crew for their work on what he calls an "astounding eight episodes." Check out his full tweet below:

Peacemaker is clearly one of Gunn's favorite projects. The director has been increasingly open on social media about the series and its companion piece, The Suicide Squad. Recently, Gunn revealed that the soundtrack for Peacemaker is his favorite out of his projects which is a high honor considering the soundtracks for his other films, including the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, have been held in high regard.

All of this means expectations are high for Peacemaker and Gunn's excitement isn't the only reason. The series will represent the first of the DCEU's spinoffs to hit screens, giving an idea of what direction the mega franchise will be going in post-Zack Snyder's Justice League. How much it ties into the main continuity of the DCEU remains to be seen, seeing as The Suicide Squad occupies an interesting position within that world. Still, it's clear that Peacemaker will be a litmus test for how other DCEU series will perform on HBO Max.
