DC reveals the official January premiere date for HBO Max's PeacemakerEven before James Gunn's updated take on the Suicide Squad rolled out in August, John Cena's peace-loving anti-hero was singled out as a character to watch. Last year, he got the greenlight for his own HBO Max spin-off series, Peacemaker, and production took place earlier this year. Set in both the past and the present, Peacemaker will pick up with Cena's character following the events of The Suicide Squad, which very nearly killed him off for good.

In addition to Cena, Peacemaker stars Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stroma, and Chukwudi Iwuji. Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee will both reprise their Suicide Squad characters for the series, and Gunn (who wrote and directed episodes of the show) has hinted there could be some additional surprises in store among the cast. For some time, it's been confirmed that Peacemaker will premiere in January on HBO Max, but now thanks to DC FanDome, fans know exactly when.

Alongside the premiere of the full Peacemaker trailer, the show's official release date was confirmed. Peacemaker will arrive on HBO Max on Thursday, January 13. For its first season, the series will have 8 episodes and will, like most HBO Max originals, roll out weekly.

Peacemaker wearing his helmet in The Suicide Squad

Originally, it was rumored that Peacemaker would premiere on January 16. That date was later proven to be unconfirmed, and now it's clear the series is keeping with HBO Max's preferred day of the week for new releases: Thursday. Peacemaker will now run through February, thus ensuring DC fans have plenty of content for the early weeks of 2022. Whether the show will then return for season 2 remains to be seen, though Gunn has said he hopes to get a renewal. Should Peacemaker prove to be a success, fans can probably expect to see a lot more of Cena's helmeted bad guy.

As the end-credits scene for The Suicide Squad revealed, the miraculously surviving Peacemaker will be recruited to once again save the world. This time, he'll be working with a new team, and he'll hopefully have better luck getting along with them. Peacemaker is also expected to touch upon the character's origins; to support this, Patrick is playing Peacemaker's father. For fans who enjoyed Cena's performance in The Suicide Squad, the HBO Max spin-off will be the perfect show for them. Luckily, audiences only have to wait a few more months to find out what Gunn and Cena have cooked up with Peacemaker.
