[Update - July 26 2021, 11pm ET: HBO Max has confirmed with us that this date is not accurate and that a date has not yet been set. We've reached out to Fandom to see where they got the info that DC had set these dates.]

The premiere date has been revealed for James Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad spinoff series, Peacemaker, with the first three episodes releasing on the same day. The upcoming HBO Max series stars John Cena as the ruthless killer, Peacemaker, one of the newest additions to the DC Extended Universe. Described as a "douchey Captain America" who will do anything to achieve peace - including kill - Cena's Peacemaker will be a new member of Task Force X in Gunn's sequel-reboot of 2016's Suicide Squad. A spinoff show was first announced in September 2020, with Gunn attached as producing, writing every episode, and directing several episodes.

The series will include several characters from Gunn's The Suicide Squad, including Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee's John Economos. The eight-episode series will explore the titular character's origins. However, Gunn revealed the Peacemaker's timeline would not be made clear until after The Suicide Squad, which is currently set for release in both theaters and HBO Max on August 6. The show wrapped production in Toronto and Vancouver earlier this month, and the premiere date has now been confirmed, with an extra special treat for fans.

Per the Fandom Twitter account, DC will premiere the first three episodes of Peacemaker on January 16, 2022. The first three episodes coming to HBO Max are titled, "A Whole New Whirled," "Best Friends Never," and "Better Goff Dead." The rest of the season will likely follow on a weekly basis.

Gunn has previously stated that the show would get a January 2022 release, but now the series has an official release date. Warner Bros keeps much of the show's plot under wraps, but on-set photos and new faces to the DC universe have been revealed since the start of production. In addition to Cena and The Suicide Squad members, cast members include Orange Is the New Black's Danielle Brooks, When They See Us' Chukwudi Iwuji, Riverdale actor, Lochlyn Munro, Shades of Blue's Annie Chang, Togo's Christopher Heyerdahl and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 actor, Elizabeth Faith Ludlow.

The announcement of the first three episodes of Peacemaker premiering on the same day has likely generated even more hype among fans. It's not a big surprise that HBO Max is doing this, though, as many streamers seem to be implementing this strategy lately, including Disney+ with WandaVision. However, it's typically done with only the first two episodes, so three episodes streaming at once is pretty big.
