A new poster for James Gunn and DC’s The Suicide Squad spinoff series Peacemaker shows John Cena’s titular character alongside his new team of heroes and allies. Introduced in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, Cena’s Peacemaker was described by the actor as “a douchy Captain America”; a parody of the super-patriotic heroes of classic comics. The helmet-wearing colourful crusader loves peace so much he’s willing to kill for it, and he was one of several standout comedic characters in the summer blockbuster. Following the successful semi-reboot, Gunn soon announced a HBO Max spinoff series based on the comic book hero, set to continue his story.

Peacemaker will see the titular character, real name Christopher Smith, reunited with the agents at ARGUS and other allies old and new to embark on an important secret mission. The show will also explore elements of the character’s origin and what led him to don the colorful costume. Debuting early in 2022, the series is the first live-action show that is fully connected to the current DCEU canon of the movies.

Gunn took to Twitter to share a new Peacemaker poster, which shows audiences the team of faces headlining the spinoff. As expected, Cena's titular character is front and center alongside his trusty sidekick Eagly. Other members of the Peacemaker ensemble are also present, a combination of returning The Suicide Squad characters and newcomers to the franchise. Check out the poster in the space below:

Similar to the recent Peacemaker trailer that released, the poster illustrates the show's irreverent tone that will make it stand out from other comic book adaptations. Most notably, the tagline "They give peace a bad name" is amusing given the irony, as it underscores the team's penchant for brutal violence in order to accomplish their mission. The imagery of Vigilante wielding a chain saw and giving a thumbs up is also funny, suggesting the character will take glee in murdering his foes. It's clear from all the Peacemaker marketing to date these characters aren't traditional heroes, but they'll still be entertaining to watch onscreen - especially when presented through Gunn's lens, as he's made a career out of bringing these kinds of stories to life.

The new series looks to carry over the same dry, unapologetic humor that Gunn perfected in his Suicide Squad movie. Like that film, however, there is also set to be a heart hidden beneath and a focus on unlikely friendships. This new poster gives fans a chance to see what relationships might build as this new bunch of oddballs come together to fight the good fight. Peacemaker debuts on HBO Max on January 13th.
