HBO Max has unveiled a new poster for its upcoming original series, Peacemaker. The first spin-off show to emerge out of The Suicide Squad, James Gunn's irreverent DC feature debut directed during his brief firing from Guardians of the Galaxy, Peacemaker centers on John Cena's eponymous anti-villain, Christopher Smith. As the showrunner, Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker, in addition to directing five of them while he was finishing work on The Suicide Squad. Production took place between January and July 2021, and now Peacemaker is slated to launch in January 2022.

Although plot details on Peacemaker remain slim, the show is expected to explore the origins of Cena's character, whom Gunn describes as a "douchey version of Captain America." Peacemaker has a troubled past, which involves his father's suicide, and the show charts his journey as he grapples with this trauma, making rational and irrational decisions to "achieve peace at any cost." With DC FanDome inching closer, the marketing campaign for Peacemaker has received quite a kick. Recently, new footage, images, and BTS shots from the show have surfaced, and a teaser trailer is due to arrive next week too.

HBO Max recently revealed a new poster for Peacemaker. The image spotlights Cena's anti-hero as he sits atop his car posing in his signature silly costume with a gun. A line from the poster reads "give peace a f#cking chance," which is the official tagline for the show. It's reiterated that Peacemaker will premiere on HBO Max in January, although a specific release date is still not mentioned. Take a look at the poster below.

Cena's costume and car from Peacemaker were also seen during a recent promotional clip. The footage saw Peacemaker recovering from the injuries he sustained in The Suicide Squad as he came to meet his new teammates at a diner. As mentioned previously, Peacemaker will now team with fellow ARGUS members Steve Agee's John Economos, Danielle Brooks's Leota Adebayo, Robert Patrick's Auggie Smith, Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt, Freddie Stroma's Adrian Chase / Vigilante, and Chukwudi Iwuji's Clemson Murn to form a black-ops team to prevent some sort of impending catastrophe. The new team members, however, are doubtful of Peacemaker's attitude, abilities, and commitment.

It's true that the new poster doesn't give away much in terms of new information about Peacemaker. It does, though, build the hype for Peacemaker's panel at DC FanDome on October 16. So far, fans do not have a specific premiere date and synopsis for Peacemaker. But that will all hopefully change next week as the teaser trailer reveals new information about the show. However, an important thing to note is that the poster does give an idea about Peacemaker's tone. The Suicide Squad was vibrant and joyfully anarchic, which was reflected well in its colorful posters and trailers. Peacemaker, however, is a bit more grounded and quieter than the film, and this is perceivable through the poster's comparatively subtle color palette and the retro aesthetic of previous clips. Hopefully, fans will learn more about Peacemaker in the coming days.
