Director James Gunn has trolled fans online with a supposed "leak" from his upcoming DC spinoff series Peacemaker. Gunn, who directed 2021’s The Suicide Squad, is helming the DCEU’s first in-universe live action series on HBO Max. Peacemaker follows the titular character introduced in last year’s Suicide Squad soft reboot, as played by former WWE star John Cena. Cena's Peacemaker leads a team of covert operatives and agents on top secret missions to protect liberty. The anti-hero is joined by returning characters from The Suicide Squad, including Steve Agee’s John Economos, as well as new heroes like Freddie Stroma’s Adrian Chase.

One of the standout new characters featured in the show’s marketing material is Peacemaker’s trusty pet, Eagly, an American bald eagle who acts as a sidekick to the satirical DC character. The unusual pet further adds to Peacemaker’s style as a larger than life all-American hero (described once by Cena as “A douchy Captain America”). While it’s unknown just how consciously and intentionally the aptly-named Eagly fights for peace and liberty in the series, he seems loyal to Cena’s character and has been seen embracing him in his large wings in recent Peacemaker trailers and promos.

In a new tweet posted by Gunn, the writer and director has trolled eager fans with a fake leaked scene. In a light-hearted tweet satirising the culture of online leaks and scoops, Gunn jokes “Who leaked this Eagly scene? Not cool.” Attached to the tweet is a hilarious video of a bald eagle, given animated human arms, edited to carry out numerous ultra-American activities including carrying the Stars and Stripes, playing baseball and holding the torch of the the Statue of Liberty. Set to the infamous song "America. F**k yeah" from Team America: World Police, the parody video will have surely fooled some people, at least for a few seconds. See the original post below:

Gunn’s tweet, while capturing the satirical tone for his upcoming show, also parodies the recent big screen leaks for Marvel and DC content, including recent films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which several huge leaks circulated on Twitter in the months prior to the movie’s release. Gunn’s trademark sense of humor has been a key part of the marketing for DC’s Peacemaker series, with the director’s knack for social media coming in handy too. Recent viral marketing techniques saw Twitter questions from fans displayed on billboards in Times Square, while Cena himself has also been spotted suited up as the morally questionable hero on TikTok.

Fans of Gunn’s The Suicide Squad film and Cena’s breakout comedy character are eagerly awaiting the new show, which debuts later this month. For many, Eagly is set to be one of the most beloved debutants in the DC series. While Gunn jokes about leaks, it seems that most of Peacemaker's plot and surprises are still under wraps with just days to go. For now, Peacemaker and Eagly have protected themselves from spoilers, but it's certain that fans haven't seen the last of Gunn's Twitter updates and teases, and should be sure to keep an eye out for more.
