Director James Gunn has said episode 6 of his upcoming Peacemaker show is his favorite. John Cena’s Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, first appeared in Gunn’s R-rated reboot/light sequel The Suicide Squad as he was a part of the new Task Force X team. The film briefly explored Peacemaker’s “bro-ey” or “douchey” ways, as well as his twisted desire to obtain peace by any means necessary. Gunn’s fascination with the obscure Peacemaker character and his “ability to learn” led to the writer/director writing a The Suicide Squad spinoff series for HBO Max based on Cena’s antihero. The series consists of eight episodes, with Gunn writing all of them and directing five.

The HBO Max series picks up from the post-credits scene of The Suicide Squad, where Peacemaker miraculously survives a bullet from Bloodsport. As various trailers have shown, Cena’s character will work alongside a new team consisting of familiar faces, such as Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee). Plus some new faces like Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji), and Peacemaker’s irritating protégé character, Vigilante (Freddie Stroma). Peacemaker will see Smith and co. going after targets known as “Butterflies” in a reckless, ruthless, and humorous fashion, but it will also explore the titular character’s past and his deep-rooted issues connected to his father (Robert Patrick). Promotion is in full swing ahead of the series’ January 13th release, and now Gunn has highlighted a particular episode as his favorite.

In response to a fan tweeting praise for Gunn’s Q&A with SUPES and expressing excitement to discover why episode 6 of Peacemaker is Gunn’s favorite, Gunn replied and also doubled down on his comments from the Q&A by stating that episode 6 of the series holds a “special place” in his heart. Although the director does not elaborate much on why, it’s clear to see he has a favorite. Full tweet can be seen below:

Considering there are eight episodes in total of Peacemaker, it makes sense that episode 6 could be a standout, as the series will be nearing its end, and the build-up to a likely explosive finale will almost surely be heating up. It will be curious to see where Peacemaker is in his journey and whether he’s leaning more towards being a hero or villain. In addition to showing the antihero’s idiotic nature, trailers have also given a glimpse into the grounded and emotional side of the character, highlighted by moments like his hesitancy to kill children. So it’s evident that Peacemaker will experience emotions that were perhaps previously foreign to him. Gunn also revealed that each Peacemaker episode features a post-credits scene, so it will be interesting to see what’s packed into episode 6 and whether that’s an episode that Gunn himself directed.

HBO Max’s first DCEU series appears promising due to the trailers showcasing all the humor and R-rated violence that earned The Suicide Squad great praise. But in typical Gunn fashion, it also contains the all-important emotional journey for the obscure lead character. The writer-director has already expressed interest in making a Peacemaker season 2. However, that will depend on the reception Peacemaker receives on HBO Max, but based on Gunn’s track record, fans are no doubt excited for the series and will now most likely be keeping a keen eye on episode 6 of Peacemaker.
