James Gunn’s Peacemaker TV show, which stars John Cena, will have connections to the larger DCEU. Gunn is best known for successfully bringing the peculiar band of “a-holes” to life with his Guardians of the Galaxy films, but before the director returns to his beloved Marvel franchise, Warner Bros. will be hoping the director can work his magic on The Suicide Squad. A soft reboot/sequel to the disappointing 2016 Suicide Squad will see Task Force X embark on a dangerous mission that may ultimately lead to them battling the film’s antagonist, Starro. In addition to the familiar faces like Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), the film’s band of villains has some new faces, such as Bloodsport (Idris Elba), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and Peacemaker (John Cena).

Warner Bros.’ expectations for Cena’s Peacemaker character are clearly high, as not only does he appear to be one of the standout characters in the film, but he already has a HBO Max series that is currently filming. Gunn has written the upcoming series and will also direct several episodes, and despite seeing Cena in some bloody set photos, not much is known about the series. Peacemaker will explore the character’s origins and feature characters from The Suicide Squad. However, according to Gunn, it appears the show will also connect to the larger DCEU as well.

Gunn, who is often seen interacting with fans on Twitter, has been sharing a lot of little details on the social media site regarding his upcoming Peacemaker series, such as his inspirations for the show. Yesterday, a fan tweeted the director asking, “will the Peacemaker show have references/ connected to the bigger DCEU?” Gunn replied with a simple “Yes.” However, as one would expect, Gunn does not elaborate on this answer. Full tweet can be seen below:

Gunn’s answer makes sense, considering the show will connect to The Suicide Squad, which is connected to the larger DCEU as one of its stars is Robbie’s Harley Quinn, who has already starred in two other DCEU projects. Also, this seems to reconfirm The Suicide Squad director’s comments from last year, where he stated that the Peacemaker show “is connected to the DC film universe” and that it’ll be “the first show to air that is.” It will be interesting to see how the show has tie-ins to parts of the DCEU that go beyond Gunn’s upcoming ensemble film. In the comments, the director did also tease that he may have plans for other DC properties post-Peacemaker. So it’s possible he may also continue linking the DCEU in other TV shows, as the director has already hinted that he may stick to TV after Peacemaker.

Gunn did previously state that he could not giveaway the timeline for the Peacemaker show until after The Suicide Squad’s release, as it would spoil the film. Once The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6, it will likely provide fans with more clues as to what sort of connections Peacemaker has with the larger DCEU. Also, having come from the Marvel world, it’s possible Gunn will throw some Easter eggs in the show for fans as well. However, first and foremost, Warner Bros. and Gunn will be hoping The Suicide Squad is a winner, and fans want to see more DCEU connections in a show like Peacemaker.
