Peacemaker’s James Gunn has confirmed that Bat-Mite is officially canon in the DCEU. The series follows Christopher Smith a.k.a Peacemaker (John Cena) on a brand-new mission handed down from Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and her team. New episodes drop every Thursday, with the first three hitting HBO Max this week.

Peacemaker follows the events of The Suicide Squad and picks up with the titular anti-hero as he recovers from the wounds he suffered during the climax of the film. Now seemingly a free man, Christopher Smith is recruited once again by the United States government for a new top-secret mission. This mission pairs him up with a team of agents to provide him support in the field, including John (Steve Agee), who reveals the existence of Bat-Mite as a “two-foot-tall interdimensional imp who stans Batman.”

Peacemaker officially hit HBO Max this week, bringing with it a unique brand of hardcore insanity. One such element that the series has brought to the table is an earnest reference to Bat-Mite’s existence within the DCEU. Taking to Instagram to celebrate the premiere of the series, James Gunn posted an image of Bat-Mite, noting that he is indeed now canon. Check out the image below.

So, while audiences do not actually see Bat-Mite in Peacemaker, James Gunn has confirmed that the character does exist within the DC Extended Universe. Very much a product of the Silver Age of Comics, the character was introduced in 1959 as a supernatural imp from another dimension who harbors a deep fascination with Batman. He is often compared to Mr. Mxyzptlk from the Superman side of the DC world, though Bat-Mite generally is more heroically aligned with Batman in his depictions – even if he sometimes is a huge thorn in The Dark Knight’s side.

Of course, while Bat-Mite is now canon in the wings of the DCEU, whether or not audiences will actually meet the diminutive character remains to be seen. Even as the DCEU has become increasingly weird in the last few years, interdimensional imps may still be a bridge too far. That said, Bat-Mite has sometimes been depicted in less literal ways in the comics, serving as a representation of Batman’s “rational mind,” which could serve as a possible workaround to bring him into a show as grounded as Peacemaker. Until DC reveals more about the potential future of Bat-Mite in the DCEU, new episodes of Peacemaker drop every Thursday on HBO Max.
