James Gunn confirms HBO Max has renewed Peacemaker for season 2 a day ahead of the season 1 finale airing on the streaming platform. The series serves as a spinoff from Gunn's DC Extended Universe debut The Suicide Squad and revolves around John Cena's titular character of the same name. Alongside Cena, Peacemaker sees the returns of film stars Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee and Viola Davis as well as introducing Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Lochlyn Munro and Annie Chang to the DCEU.

Peacemaker picks up five months after the events of The Suicide Squad as Christopher Smith is fully recovered from his failed mission and re-enlisted by Amanda Waller to join Project Butterfly. The black ops squad, headed by shady mercenary Clemson Murn and including fresh blood Leota Adebayo and A.R.G.U.S. agents John Economos and Emilia Harcourt, are tasked with tracking down and killing extraterrestrial parasitic beings before they can complete their plans to conquer the Earth. Peacemaker has been a critical hit since premiering on HBO Max in January and thanks to its strong viewership, it looks to only just be getting started.

News of Peacemaker's season 2 renewal shouldn't come as much of a surprise given the success it has enjoyed since premiering on HBO Max. Within a month of making its debut, the series has become the best-reviewed DCEU title to date, surpassing 2017's Wonder Woman with its 94 percent approval rating from critics in comparison to the 93 percent rating held by the Gal Gadot-starring film. Peacemaker has also proven to be far more in demand than a number of titles released in recent months, including Disney+'s The Book of Boba Fett, with a study conducted by Parrot Analytics putting it as 69.5 times more popular than the average show.

Additionally, the cast and crew behind Peacemaker have been enthusiastic about the prospects of returning for season 2, with confirming numerous times his desire to continue the series and even expressing in January the renewal was likely to happen. While no timetable has been given at the time of writing for when season 2 could come about, Gunn has noted he wants to take a bit of a break after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 while still being ready to come back for the show and even having saved a mystery character for the now-confirmed new season. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with Peacemaker season 1 on HBO Max now ahead of the finale airing this week.
