James Gunn is still on board to produce Peacemaker season 2. The first spin-off spawned by Gunn's DCEU debut, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker focuses on John Cena's titular antihero, Christopher Smith. Peacemaker was shown to have seemingly died in The Suicide Squad, but during the movie's post-credits scene he turned out to be alive, although he was still in a coma. Now, the character, described as a "douchey" version of Captain America, will roll back into action for his solo series, which is due to premiere on HBO Max in January 2022.

At the moment, plot details for Peacemaker are quite slim. But according to what is known about the show, the story focuses on the character's journey as he is recruited to help a black ops team prevent a catastrophe, alongside Jennifer Holland's Emilia, Steve Agee's John, Robert Patrick's Auggie, Chukwudi Iwuji's Murn, Danielle Brooks' Leota, and Freddie Stroma's Vigilante. Currently, Peacemaker is slated for an eight-episode run on HBO Max. But Gunn is committed to making more seasons if he is given the opportunity. Earlier, the multi-hyphenate writer-director-producer stated that he has been saving up a mystery character for a potential second season of Peacemaker, and now again, he has reiterated his interest in continuing the series.

On Monday, in a conversation with EW, James Gunn revealed he was open to producing more seasons for Peacemaker. The Suicide Squad helmer said that he is certainly down for a second season, as long as the first one is well-received. Gunn added that Warner Bros. also needs to tells him that they're keen on seeing more content, saying "I would like to do a season 2. They just have to tell me that they want to do it."

Although Gunn claims that he did Peacemaker "mostly for fun," he has been heavily involved in the show's development right from the get-go. Not only does he serve as the showrunner, but Gunn has also written all eight episodes for Peacemaker, in addition to directing five of them. Gunn created Peacemaker while he was finishing work on The Suicide Squad, which enabled him to imbue the film's no holds barred attitude into the show. He still insists that the spin-off is a tad bit more grounded than its source material, although the action in the Peacemaker series still surpasses that seen in any other superhero series.

While the prospect of a second season for Peacemaker does sound exciting, fans should note that nothing is official as of yet. In fact, even if Peacemaker does get renewed, the wait for season 2 will be agonizingly long, as Gunn is occupied for the better part of 2022 with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Therefore, he probably won't be able to start working on a new season, at least, until late next year, which means that the show couldn't possibly air before mid-2023. Right now, the focus should be more on season 1, which fans will learn more about at the upcoming DC FanDome. The excitement for Peacemaker has been ramped up thanks to a first-look photo featuring all the main characters, and hopefully, fans will get a clearer idea about the show once a trailer is unveiled.
