Peacemaker director James Gunn reveals that season 2 will feature more DCEU cameos. Following the success of the 2021 film, The Suicide Squad, Gunn created the HBO spin-off series, starring John Cena reprising his role as Christopher Smith, a.k.a. Peacemaker. The season finale concluded in February, breaking the record for the highest single-day viewership of an HBO Max original episode for the streaming platform.
The HBO series featured several DCEU references and Easter eggs, from Peacemaker’s rant about Batman to him insulting the members of the Justice League while appearing as a guest speaker at a school. The season finale episode concluded with several surprise cameos from DCEU’s Justice League. Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller appeared in the finale as Aquaman and The Flash, alongside the silhouette of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Henry Cavill’s Superman.
In an interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar+), Gunn discussed further details of the cameo appearances in the finale episode of Peacemaker. Following the announcement of the series’ renewal, Gunn alludes to the possibility of adding more cameos or Easter eggs in the future, as the series progresses to connect with other DCEU projects at HBO Max. Gunn continues by adding his skepticism to bringing the Justice League for every season as it may have been a "one-time thing." However, he does add that the "cameos will keep coming." "I think we're going to see more connections in some other stuff as we move forward with Peacemaker and other shows at HBO Max. So those [cameos] will keep coming," Gunn says. "I don't know if the Justice League is going to show up in every season of Peacemaker; that might be a one-time thing. We'll see!"
Gunn’s uncertainty about featuring endless Justice League appearances may stem from DC and Warner Bros’ undisclosed plans and the probable timeline changes made by the upcoming The Flash movie, as Batman and Cyborg remained absent from the appearances in the finale episode. Recently, actor and stunt double, Matt Turner, disclosed that Ben Affleck's Batman costume was set to appear alongside the titular team, but was ultimately cut from the final edit. However, with the imminent arrival of the forthcoming DCEU series and the live-action film, Blue Beetle, on HBO Max, it is likely that Gunn may be referring to the correlations made between the upcoming additions in the DCEU.
Along with working on season 2 of Peacemaker, Gunn recently teased that he may be working on multiple projects for DC and implied a second spin-off from The Suicide Squad for HBO Max. Therefore, it leaves many more opportunities in the future for Gunn to introduce additional cameos or Easter eggs that align with the DCEU timeline. This would also provide Gunn the convenience of having more control in the DC projects, allowing him to choose future connections to Peacemaker.
