A Peacemaker fan edit has completed the Justice League cameo in the finale by adding both Batman and Cyborg back into the line-up. Peacemaker, a spin-off of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, is the first TV series explicitly set within the DCEU, with Gunn serving as showrunner and the focus being on John Cena’s patriotically deranged special agent. The show has been a huge success for HBO Max, with engagement from fans and audiences being high enough for a second season to be commissioned as well as Gunn working on an addtional spin-off for another, as yet unconfirmed, character from The Suicide Squad.

The Peacemaker finale recently caused some controversy among the DC fanbase as it featured an unexpected cameo from the Justice League. However, this was not as well-received as the cameo’s fans have celebrated in Marvel properties, due to some key issues. Of the six current Justice League members in the DCEU, only four were present as Batman and Cyborg were completely omitted from the line-up. Of those four, only Aquaman and The Flash were represented by their actors, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller, with Superman and Wonder Woman portrayed by stand-ins who were kept in shadow.

Twitter user @boomborks, has edited the image of the Justice League line-up to reinsert Batman and Cyborg along with the rest of the team. The image is the shot of Cena’s Peacemaker spying the League in the distance with all six of them obscured in shadow. Batman and Cyborg have been inserted on either side of the original line-up, with edited publicity images being used to bring the entire League together.

The edit is undoubtedly emblematic of what fans would have expected as the bare minimum for a Justice League cameo in having all members of the team present. While indeed, there was never a reasonable expectation of the League appearing in the show, with Gunn’s creative vision being quite different from Zack Snyder’s, the omission of two key members was enough to stop the reveal from being a pleasant surprise for most fans. The fact that two wildly different corners of the DCEU have come together in this way may indicate that Warner Bros. is becoming more confident in moving forward with the shared continuity of the DCEU after years of seemingly struggling against lackluster                   reviews and box office.

The omission of these characters in the first place has led fans to speculate on what this means for the future of the Justice League. It may be fair to assume the reason for the absence of Ray Fisher’s Cyborg is due to the actor’s public calling out of abusive behavior from Joss Whedon on the Justice League reshoots, which he alleges was enabled by Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada. Ever since, both Fisher and his version of Cyborg have seemingly been excluded from any promotional material relating to Justice League and the DCEU, with no future film appearances currently planned. The lack of Batman is also interesting as Ben Affleck is due to reprise the role in The Flash later this year, though that film will also feature Michael Keaton’s Batman, leading fans to believe that the time-traveling nature of the plot will retcon Keaton into replacing Affleck as the definitive Batman of the DCEU. While it could be that the decision of who was allowed to appear in the Peacemaker finale was not up to Gunn, but mandated by studio politics, this edit seems to give an idea of what would’ve made fans a lot happier.
