Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Peacemaker episode 5, "Monkey Dory".

Star Steve Agee exclusively reveals John Cena improvised his character's entire rant to John Economos in Peacemaker episode 5's opening. Agee previously made his DC Extended Universe debut in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad as Economos, an A.R.G.U.S. agent working under Amanda Waller in the Belle Reve control room for Task Force X, aiding in technical and tactical support during Project Starfish. Peacemaker marks the latest reunion between Agee and Gunn after having previously worked together on the filmmaker's 2010 black comedy Super and 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as well as having a supporting role in the Gunn-produced horror film Brightburn.

In addition to Economos, Agee served as the on-set stand-in and motion capture performer for King Shark on The Suicide Squad, with Sylvester Stallone providing the vocal performance for the character. Peacemaker sees Economos and teammate Emilia Harcourt roped into Project Butterfly with Peacemaker by Amanda Waller in retaliation for their involvement in helping Task Force X save Corto Maltese from Starro the Conqueror. The first DCEU series has received rave reviews from critics and audiences for its unique brand of humor and character development and it appears the former isn't solely thanks to Gunn.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for the series, Steve Agee revealed that John Cena improvised his entire rant to Economos in Peacemaker episode 5. The actor recalled the original script only having Cena's titular character citing Ariana Grande and one other celebrity as other options to frame in place of Peacemaker's father, but that Gunn encouraged Cena to go as far as he wanted with the list of names. See what Agee shared below:

"That was all improvised. I think in the original script, he's mad at me for framing his father – rightfully so, that was stupid – but in the script, it was just like, 'Why couldn't you have framed somebody like Ariana Grande?' And there was one other name, like Tom Hanks or something, and I was like, 'You want me to frame Ariana Grande for murder? Are you insane?' But James was like, 'Just keep going. Start naming names. Just name people.' I mean, we shot it for like 20 minutes of John just shouting random names – sports figures, celebrities, singers, politicians – and I would start to say something and he's just like, 'Let me finish!' He just kept going and it was phenomenal. I haven't seen the end credits scene yet, but I think there's more of it in the end credits, seeing him just spouting names."

Agee's Economos has endured a tough go of things since being put on Project Butterfly by Waller, namely having to crash the team's recon van into Judomaster's car in an effort to prevent his escape, and subsequently being attacked by him after he breaks free of his restraints. Additionally, Peacemaker's behavior has not made things easy for the character in the wake of Economos getting his father sent to prison while trying to cover any tracks linking the antihero to the bloody events of the first two episodes of the show. Peacemaker episode 5 did mark a nice turning of the tide towards Economos' favor with Cena's character upon learning of their shared taste in the Finnish glam metal band Hanois Rocks and Economos saving Peacemaker and his team from a Butterfly-controlled gorilla by killing it with a chainsaw.

It may not come as much surprise to learn that Cena improvised his entire rant to Economos in Peacemaker episode 5 given the star's frequent flexing of his comedic talents on screen since receiving rave reviews in 2015's Trainwreck. Additionally, Gunn has previously stated that he kept more of Cena's improv in the final product than any other actor he's worked with, with the celebrity and fictional character-laden rant included in both the main episode and end-credits scene serving as ultimate proof of this. Only time will tell what improv Cena has in store next when Peacemaker returns for episode 6 next Thursday.
