Warning: Contains spoilers for Peacemaker

James Gunn's Peacemaker is the perfect continuation of his superb 2021 movie The Suicide Squad. John Cena again brings his A-game to the role of Christopher Smith and by his side are some extremely entertaining characters.

Some of them skew more towards being an antihero than a hero, while others are outright villains, but what they all have in common is their watchable nature. The viewer wants them to live through all eight episodes, even if they haven't all done such great things for the world.

Keeya Adebayo (Elizabeth Faith Ludlow)

Elizabeth Ludlow as Keeya Adebayo in Peacemaker

Elizabeth Ludlow doesn't get many scenes throughout Peacemaker's eight episodes, but Keeya Adebayo makes a great impression. As Leota's concerned wife, Keeya seems to fully realize how powerful her mother-in-law's sway is, particularly over her spouse.

She's getting tired of the secrecy involved in Leota's new job. She feels it's changing her spouse and weakening their relationship, but she hangs in there. The viewer gets the sense it's because she knew Leota would end up doing the right thing no matter what.

Detective Sophie Song (Annie Chang)

Sophie Song with her arms crossed in Peacemaker

While Detective Sophie Song gets taken over by a "Butterfly" in the sixth episode, she still gets several appearances as a human to show just how proficient a detective she is. Her character is also an excellent way for the audience to learn about the Butterflies in a gradual manner; they learn what she learns when she learns it.

Butterfly-Song is even more gung-ho. It's stated several times that the Butterflies utilize the memories of their host to function in society. Along with memories, they inherit traits, and Butterfly-Song got the host's tenacity. Just now it's in pursuit of eliminating the human race, or at least a substantial portion of it.

John Economos (Steve Agee)

John Economos is another returning character from The Suicide Squad, along with Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt and the title character. Economos gets to make an even bigger impact in the series, which sheds some heartbreaking light on who he is and how he sees himself.

Economos's tender moments are what make him one of the show's better characters. However, the most memorable moment would have to be his combatting a massive, furious escaped gorilla, which he kills with a chainsaw.

Auggie Smith / White Dragon (Robert Patrick)

White Dragon Flying in Peacemaker

While he wasn't Peacemaker's father in the source material, the character detail is an excellent addition. Auggie Smith's toxic dynamic with his son makes him one of the show's most interesting presences, even if he's far from decent.

The first time viewers meet Auggie, it's when Peacemaker goes to retrieve his partner, Eagly. It's immediately clear where Chris got his jingoism, as his father is a white supremacist. In fact, he's even dressed up in an Iron Man-type suit to act as a particularly nasty supervillain.

Adrian Chase / Vigilante (Freddie Stroma)

Vigilante with Eagly in Peacemaker

Adrian Chase's childlike mind keeps him from being Peacemaker's smartest character, and his enthusiasm for killing is concerning, but Vigilante is still one of the show's best "heroes".

He was a one-time partner to Peacemaker and spends his first few episodes glomming onto Smith's A.R.G.U.S. recruitment. He's a quirky man who thinks making funny faces in rapid succession can make someone unrecognizable. An unpredictable individual, he's still a good antihero to have in a fight.

Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji)

Clemson Murn Peacemaker

Clemson Murn is the leader of "Project Butterfly," Amanda Waller's direct contact who recruits Smith. He's a no-nonsense guy who offers two options: suit up or go back to prison. Murn is also a man with a secret, as it's revealed midway through the first season that he himself is a Butterfly.

He reveals to the group that the Butterflies came from a dying planet. Unfortunately, when they saw how the human race was going down a similar path, they decided to inhabit human bodies and make environmentally-conscious decisions for them. Murn put his life on the line to be the sole dissenter, knowing full well that he would most likely die for his treason.

Eagly

Eagly is a fully CGI creation that steals nearly every scene he's in. Like the MCU's Groot, he's both an ally and a source of humor. Furthermore, he and Smith share a few bonding scenes that rank among the series' best overall.

The special effects used to bring Eagly to life are impressive, with him displaying personality in both the smaller scenes and the set pieces. He's great in both, but the action scenes allow for some extra humor courtesy of just how proficient a marksman Eagly is when diving towards a bad guy's face.

Agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland)

Jennifer Holland as Harcourt in Peacemaker

Agent Harcourt makes it clear how she feels about overbearing men constantly hitting on her while she's trying to be at peace. She's one of Peacemaker's best fighters and, at first, seems unwilling to show her soft side. Whether it's in the final battle or the first episode's bar fight, she won't be beaten.

There's a sweet moment of her finally warming up to the group; While Riding on their team bus, she slowly pulls out her phone and takes a snapshot of them having fun. A smile grows on her face, and the audience is reassured that she isn't duplicitous like her boss, Waller.

Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks)

Peacemaker's Leota Adebayo

Easily one of Peacemaker's most likable characters, Leota Adebayo is the type of person to follow her gut instead of orders she knows are wrong. She'll stumble, but she also has an intimidating mother in Amanda Waller.

Adebayo is a woman trying to figure out her place in the world, and she definitely doesn't think it's as a member of A.R.G.U.S. However, she learns that the job is something she can do, just not in the morally bankrupt way her mother has operated in the position.

Christopher Smith / Peacemaker (John Cena)

John Cena as Peacemaker in Episode 7

Just as Peacemaker was one of the best parts of The Suicide Squad, the same applies to his eponymous series. However, Christopher Smith is a very different human being after waking up from his coma.

But the reason Peacemaker is the best character of his own series is his redemption. He's a villain who has committed atrocious acts, but now the audience gets to see the insidious influence that instilled him with hate. The show is partially about stopping an invasion, but it's also about stopping one's demons from taking them over.
