There's a lot to like about the upcoming sci-fi comedy Paul. Not only does it star the excellent duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), but it comes from Greg Mottola, the director of the cult comedy Superbad.
Throw in a supporting cast that includes Kristin Wiig, Sigourney Weaver, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, and Seth Rogen (as the voice of the titular foul-mouthed alien) and you've got a geeky formula for success.
Last month, Universal released the first full-length U.S. trailer for the film, showing off the movie's many hilarious pop culture references and general raunchiness. Today, IGN premiered an exclusive unedited trailer, focusing even more so on the movie's raunchy humor.
Before you watch it, you should know it's definitely NSFW. I thought it was hilarious, but I understand that some people can be sensitive about this kind of stuff. Consider yourself warned.
There's a fine line between being raunchy and funny, and simply being vulgar. In my opinion, Paul walks that line perfectly. During the Paul panel at Comic-Con last year, the cast talked about the character of Paul and why he is the way he is.
What I took away from the panel was that, while Paul is exceptional because he's an alien, he's also "normal" in the sense that he behaves like "one of the guys." Paul doesn't change, but the people around him do, which is what drives the plot. It's the juxtaposition of Paul, who acts like everything is no big deal, with the incredulous people he meets - whether the geeky pair of Pegg and Frost or the zany Kristen Wiig.
Then again, I could be overreaching. Maybe they just thought it would be funny to hear Seth Rogen say the F-word a bunch of times via a CGI alien. If that's the case, then they did their job, because I definitely laughed during the trailer.
Paul ended up clocking in at number 19 on our list of the top 20 most anticipated movies of 2011. Where does it rank on your list?
Paul hits theaters in a few short weeks on March 18th, 2011.
