Patty Jenkins Would Love to Direct a Superman Movie

If given the opportunity to helm another DC Comics movie, Patty Jenkins said she would love to direct Superman. It's no secret that Jenkins' Wonder Woman film, starring Gal Gadot as the eponymous superhero, was under significant pressure to score well with critics following the divisiveness of the previous installments in the DC Extended Universe, namely Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and David Ayer's Suicide Squad. As it so happens, Wonder Woman is not only critically-acclaimed, but it's also a worldwide box office hit.

Now, all eyes have turned to the inevitable sequel. It was previously believed that Jenkins would be returning to helm Wonder Woman 2, with her having already revealed plans to bring the story into the modern day as well as having it take place in the United States. However, she hasn't officially signed on as of yet, seeing as she is under no contractual obligation to return for the sequel. It seems ridiculous that Warner Bros. wouldn't offer her the job considering how successful Wonder Woman has been.

For argument's sake, if Jenkins isn't offered the role or if she doesn't accept the job, would she be willing to take on another DC Comics film instead? In a recent Reddit AMA, Jenkins was asked if she would be interested in tackling another DC superhero if given the chance, and she said that she would love to make a Superman movie.

"It's no secret that I love Superman but right now I'm just happy doing Wonder Woman."

Wonder Woman and Superman

It's interesting that Jenkins would choose Superman of all characters. She has previously referred to her vision of Diana Prince as a "parallel of Superman." Furthermore, her film has paid homage to Richard Donner's original, ground-breaking 1978 Superman movie. It would be an understatement to say that Donner's film has influenced the modern superhero genre. People have looked to those movies as being the archetypal superhero story, and particularly how Superman should be portrayed. Jenkins' film is, in many ways, a modern version of that story.

Considering that her film has given audiences their first truly inspiring superhero in the DC Extended Universe, it would seem obvious that she is the perfect candidate to direct a Superman film, seeing as she would be able to get the character "right," in ways that Snyder got the character "wrong." Of course, that notion is subjective and will always be up for debate. Regardless, Jenkins has certainly proved herself to be the ideal candidate to potentially helm Man of Steel 2, should it happen.

She's not the only person interested in the character, though. Several directors have expressed interest in helming a Superman movie over the years, with Jurassic World 2 director J.A. Bayona being the latest person to throw his hat into the ring. At the moment, Warner Bros. is waiting to see how Justice League performs before solidifying plans for the future of the DCEU. We'll just have to wait and see if Man of Steel 2 is a part of that lineup, as well as if Jenkins will be involved in Wonder Woman 2.
