When it comes to awards season, Jennifer Lawrence has become a quick mainstay. While it's unclear whether she will be in the running again this year, the Academy Award-winning actress does star in yet another awards season release - Passengers. The sci-fi thriller directed by Oscar-nominee Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) and costarring Chris Pratt arrives just five days after another space based film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Trailers for Passengers have highlighted the romantic chemistry between Pratt and Lawrence, while playing up the thrilling mystery behind their situation in the film: waking up 90 years too early on a ship headed for a new planet.

Passengers is written by Jon Spaihts, who co-wrote Doctor Strange and another space thriller, Prometheus. The writer is also attached to upcoming high-profile projects like The Mummy and Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. Sony must have high hopes for Passengers (which took a while to get made), as the film commands an estimated $120 million budget. There is reason to believe the film could be successful; as previously mentioned, the film has a great cast, talented director, and successful big-budget writer. Further, the marketing campaign has been strong, and the film seems to feature no shortage of action and complexity.

Adding to the film's building excitement is a new trailer released on E! News' Twitter page. The 1-minute trailer (above) does not add much that is not already known about Passengers, but does reiterate the protagonist's most prevalent concerns - they woke up 90 years too early, on a ship destined for a new planet, and everything is not as it seems. Further, it appears the ship will suffer malfunctions beyond the sleep pods, giving Passengers a race against the clock feel.

Passengers (2016) - Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence

Passengers has all the ingredients for an exciting space blockbuster, and hopefully, is able to reach an audience destined to be monopolized by the newest Star Wars film. While it is too early for reviews, it's hard to believe the film will not receive a good share of praise. Jennifer Lawrence has been a blockbuster and awards season star for several years now, and Chris Pratt has recently become one of Hollywood's most bankable stars thanks to films like Guardians of the GalaxyJurassic World, and The Magnificent Seven. Add in the director of the Academy Award-winning The Imitation Game and the script by John Spaihts and Passengers appears destined to great things.

As we get closer to Passengers' release date, and more trailers and TV spots are released, it will become more clear what the box office prospects are for this ambitious film. We know that Rogue One - to be released five days earlier - is tracking for a $100-140 million opening. Thus, Passengers' first weekend of release will be up against a strong sophomore frame for the Star Wars anthology film. Whether there is enough room for two space epics (plus Assassin's Creed!), only time will tell.
