Fans of Parks & Recreation saw Ron Swanson go from loner to family man, but something that never changed about him was his extreme privacy, to the point where his birthday was a mystery. So, how old was Ron Swanson at the beginning and end of Parks & Recreation? Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, the political satire sitcom Parks & Recreation made its debut on NBC in 2009 and came to an end in 2015 after seven seasons.

Parks & Recreation had a rough start, as season 1 wasn’t exactly the best as the writers were still looking for the right tone and production was rushed. As a result, some elements and characters, particularly Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), changed a lot in season 2, but one character who stayed the same was Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman), Leslie’s boss. Ron was Leslie’s boss at the Parks Department and a close friend of hers, even if he preferred the term “work-place proximity associates”. Ron was best known for being against the government (yet working for it at the Parks Department), his deadpan and stereotypical masculine personality, and being extremely private about his personal life.

Ron took privacy very seriously and made sure he never left traces that pointed at where he lived, who his family is, his birthday, and more. This wasn’t an obstacle for Leslie, who after a long investigation learned when Ron’s birthday is and organized a perfect birthday celebration for him that included no one, just him, a steak, whiskey, and his favorite movies. Although his year of birth was never mentioned, some sites list it as 1967. Each season of Parks and Recreation was set in the year it was released (except the final season, but more on that later), meaning that at the beginning of the series, Ron Swanson was 42-years-old.

Season 7 of Parks & Recreation begins with a time-jump, setting it in 2017. At the beginning of the final season, then, Ron was 50-years-old. Season 7 then jumps to 2022, 2023, 2025, 2035, and 2048, though the last time the audience sees Ron is in 2035. In each future timeline, Ron would be 55, 56, 58, and 68 – and his mustache was still incredible. Ron Swanson is actually three years older than Nick Offerman, born in 1970, so it surely wasn’t hard for him to play the role as he was quite close to his character’s age.

In the years of Ron’s life that the series covered, he went from working as Director of the Pawnee City Parks & Recreation Department, to founder of Very Good Building Company, to Superintendent of National Park in Pawnee. Fans also saw him go from a loner who occasionally fell into the dangerous games of his ex-wife Tammy 2, to a family man after he married Diane, became a father to her daughters, and had a son. Parks & Recreation followed the best years in Ron Swanson’s life, and even shared a bit of his backstory through the Tammys and other elements – though only those he willingly revealed.
