Parks & Rec: 10 Times We Felt Bad For Jerry

Parks and Recreation

Jerry Gergich (real name: Gary) is one of those characters that never really escaped our minds. Although Parks and Recreation has been off the air for four years now, Pawnee's Jerry Gergich is still with us. There was something about this clumsy buffoon that made fans laugh at his pain while also feeling sad for him. He was the modern-day Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh while in the office (although he had a fabulous life outside of the Parks and Recreation Department).

It's safe to say that Jerry was the Parks and Rec. Department's punching bag, bullying him every time he stepped in the room. The saddest part about watching Jerry being bullied is that even when he tried standing up for himself, they pushed him right back down. Thankfully, over the past seven seasons of the hit show, Jerry learned to take their harsh remarks in stride and ended up coming out on top when he was elected Mayor of Pawnee (thanks to Ben). And while we do miss Jerry bumbling around the office, it's these 10 moments that continue to make us feel sad for him.

10 WHEN HE FOUND OUT HE WAS ADOPTED

Remember when Mark was on the show in the earlier seasons? Well, instead of working one day, the gang of the Parks and Recreation Department decided to see what they could dig up on each other if anyone were to ever run for office. With the Internet being a public place for people to post just about anything, everyone stopped doing actual work and began looking for dirt on their co-workers. And as per usual, Jerry tried getting in on the action but he was torn apart.

While telling Mark that he had an outstanding parking ticket, Mark hit back saying his adopted mother was caught doing illegal activity. However, it wasn't the illegal activity that got Jerry upset — it's the fact that he didn't know he was adopted...

9 WHEN APRIL AND TOM SENT HIS EMAILS TO SPAM

It was reassuring for fans when they found out Jerry was actually quite cool outside of the office. Not only did he have a family, but his wife was smoking hot and he had three equally hot daughters. He really hit the jackpot! And since the holidays are everyone's favorite time of year, Jerry and his family threw a Christmas party, inviting everyone. But when Tom, April, and Andy realized they weren't invited, they decided to go spy on Jerry's "lame" party.

As it turned out though, Jerry's party was a smash! Upset they didn't get the invite, they checked their spam and lo and behold — there were all the emails Jerry had been sending them over the years.

8 WHEN HE FELL IN THE WATER TO GET HIS BURRITO

Parks and Recreation

It was surprising to many that Leslie cared so much about Jerry when he came into work claiming to have been attacked while walking his dog in the park. (Obviously, Leslie was more upset her park was corrupt than the fact that Jerry was hurt.)

He claimed to have been beaten up by some teens and had a busted shoulder to match. Over time though, a video surfaced online showing Jerry falling into the stream to get the burrito he dropped... The reason he lied about being attacked is because he knew his co-workers would make fun of him for falling into the water. Poor Jerry!

7 WHEN HE USED PERMINATE MARKER ON THE WHITEBOARD

Once Leslie met Ann and realized that the massive hole was still a problem, causing injuries all over town, she made a game plan to create a park. After she asked Jerry to come up with the plan on the whiteboard, she decided to say "screw it!" and erase the plans for a fresh start. However, the whiteboard never erased... Jerry used a permanent marker.

6 WHEN CHRIS STARTED DATING HIS HOT DAUGHTER

Chris Traeger is by far the peppiest and most positive person in Pawnee and on the show. He never gets down when bad things come his way. And while his peppiness bothered a lot of people, who could hate his optimism! Eventually, though, Chris got lonely and Jerry invited him out to lunch with he and his daughter. The lunch obviously went well because Chris and Jerry's daughter began dating!

Jerry was totally fine with Chris dating his daughter because he knew what a standup guy Chris was. The problem really started at the Halloween party when Chris couldn't keep his hands off his daughter, making out all over the party. Jerry had no choice but to stand in agony, watching his baby girl makeout with boss.

5 WHEN SOMEONE THREW A PIE IN JERRY'S FACE

In the episode "Under the Bus," Leslie and the team are hot and heavy on Leslie's campaign trail. Deciding to rent a bus and go from town to town speaking, a pie was thrown their way while exiting the bus and guess who got hit? Jerry. Andy (who was Leslie's security at the time) decided to take matters into his own hands to find out how and why someone would throw a pie.

To break down the night, Andy threw pie after pie in Jerry's face until they finally found out who threw it. Jerry—who is pretty easy going—looked anything but thrilled as Andy smashed the pies into his face.

4 JERRY, GARY, BARRY, LARRY, LENNY, TERRY

Jerry in Parks and Rec

During "The Trial of Leslie Knope," Jerry is on the stand and needs to answer some questions for Leslie. It's then that the group finds out Jerry's name isn't actually Jerry... It's Gary. It all started when his old boss started calling him Jerry and he didn't know how to correct his boss so he let it slide. The problem is, everyone else began calling him Jerry and by that point, it was too late to go back.

Throughout his time at Parks and Rec., his co-workers called him every rhyming name besides his real one, so he was pretty used to it by the time he left the department.

3 HIS BIRTHDAY...

As luck would have it, Jerry's birthday landed on February 29th — a Leap Year. As he noted, he only has a "real birthday" every four years. Does anything ever go in Jerry's favor!?

2 WHEN HE FORGOT TO VOTE FOR LESLIE

In the last episode of season four, fans found out whether or not Leslie won the race for City Council. However, after a hectic day of making sure Leslie would come out on top, poor Jerry forgot to vote for her! To make matters worse, they claimed Leslie lost by ONE vote.

Jerry was a wreck, thinking he was the one that made Leslie lose. However, after a recount, it turned out Leslie won without his vote after all!

1 WHEN HE HAD A HEART ATTACK AND FARTED

In season five, the gang at the Parks and Recreation Department get dressed up for a Halloween party. After Ann and Leslie decide they're going to scare Tom when he exits the bathroom, who comes out instead? That's right, Jerry. Scared to death by the unexpected fright, Jerry has a heart attack. But it wasn't just any heart attack... he farted the entire time.

Luckily, Ann is a nurse so she knew what to do in the face of an emergency but it didn't help that everyone was laughing at him while a heart attack was going on.
