The Paper Girls television adaptation is one step closer to becoming a reality, with Amazon Studios announcing a series order for the show. One of the most revered comic books of the previous decades, Paper Girls released 30 issues from 2015 to 2019, winning several Eisner Awards and critical acclaim along the way. It was written by Brian K. Vaughan (who also wrote Runaways and Ex Machina, among others) and was illustrated by Cliff Chiang.
Amazon Studios announced the series order for the adaptation on Thursday morning. Legendary Television, in association with Plan B, will be developing the show for the streaming service. The co-showrunners will be Stephany Folsom, Christopher Cantwell, and Christopher C. Rogers, with Vaughan and Chiang both earning executive producer credits.
The press release revealed the series follows the same general plot the comic book series did. Paper Girls focuses on four newspaper delivery girls who become entangled in a time war the morning after Halloween in 1988, ultimately traveling through time and discovering more about themselves in the process. It's a story about fate and human will, as the girls must try to either accept or reject their respective destinies in life.
Brian K. Vaughan has plenty of experience in television and will be a crucial figure in Paper Girls' success. He previously wrote for Lost and served as the showrunner for the CBS adaptation of Stephen King's Under the Dome. There's no timetable for the debut of the show, but with excitement still buzzing a year after the comic book came to an end, Amazon will do all it can to get Paper Girls to screens soon.
