Amazon's upcoming adaptation of Paper Girls has officially added Ali Wong to its cast. Written by Brian K. Vaughn and illustrated by Cliff Chiang, the saga began life as a series of graphic novels. Published through Image Comics, it debuted on October 7, 2015. After a total of 30 issues, the story officially concluded on July 30, 2019. A year later, a Paper Girls TV show was greenlit and ordered straight to series for Amazon Prime.
With filming set to begin later this year in Chicago, Amazon Studios revealed that Wong had signed on. The actress was confirmed to be playing "Adult Erin" - the grown-up counterpart to one of the show's central characters. Ali Wong is the writer and star of the two hit stand up specials: Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife. In recent years, she has also channeled her focus into movies and TV shows. Among them, Wong co-wrote, starred in, and produced the romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. As the titular Bertie, she could also be heard alongside such as Tiffany Haddish and Steven Yeun for two seasons of Tuca and Bertie.
Stephany Folsom and Christopher C. Rogers were announced as co-showrunners. Vaughan and Chiang were also attached as executive producers alongside Plan B and Christopher Cantwell. Paper Girls was previously confirmed to star Riley Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng (the twelve-year-old version of Wong's character). Alongside her, Camryn Jones, Sofia Rosinsky, and Fina Strazza also joined as Tiffany Quilkin, Mac Coyle, and KJ Brandman, respectively.
The synopsis for the Paper Girls TV show reads: Four young girls, while out delivering papers on the morning after Halloween in 1988, become unwittingly caught in a conflict between warring factions of time-travelers, sending them on an adventure through time that will save the world. As they travel between our present, the past, and the future — they encounter future versions of themselves and now must choose to embrace or reject their fate.
A planned release date for Paper Girls has yet to be announced.
