Lily James makes a miraculous transformation into Pamela Anderson for the Hulu series Pam & Tommy. The series, which also stars The Falcon and the Winter Soldier actor Sebastian Stan, is about the theft and subsequent release of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s sex tape in the 1990s. Created by screenwriter Robert Siegel and produced by Dave Franco, Pam & Tommy is based on a 2014 Rolling Stone article, which recounted what happened when electrician Rand Gauthier stole the tape and released it onto the internet in its "wild west" early days.

Pamela Anderson was one of the biggest sex icons of the 90s. She starred in the hit TV series Baywatch, which catapulted her to fame. In 1994, she met Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee and married him on a beach in Cancun after knowing him for only four days. Pam & Tommy provides a closer look at Anderson's life with Lee, and how the release of the tape interrupted their lives and put them in the middle of a firestorm. While the series does take some liberties with the true story, they also take great care to portray Anderson and Lee as accurately as possible. That includes nailing the couple's iconic looks.

The transformation into Pamela Anderson is so uncanny that Lily James is nearly unrecognizable in the Hulu series. James, a brunette known for playing ingenues like Cinderella, is Anderson's opposite in almost every way. Anderson is known for her perfect beach body and blonde hair, and was a frequent Playboy cover girl. In preparation for the role, James studied hours of Pamela Anderson in Baywatch episodes and interviews, but to physically transform, she sat for hours in a makeup chair every day while the hair and makeup teams recreated Anderson's features. On the press tour for the series, James talked about the process, which included wearing prosthetics that altered her face and body.

Prosthetics were used not only to help make James's face look more like Anderson's but also to recreate her chest. In an interview with USA Today, Pam & Tommy makeup artist David Williams revealed that James wore a forehead prosthetic to extend the space between her brows and her hairline. The prosthetic also covered James' natural brows, which were then replaced with lace eyebrows in a pencil-thin shape that Anderson helped to popularize in the 90s. The chest prosthetic was meticulously sculpted to look exactly like Anderson's, which Williams said took three or four times to perfect. James also wore mouthpieces that recreated Anderson's smile and pouty lips.

After the prosthetics were applied, James then had her face and body contoured with makeup to further transform her into Anderson. She wore blue contact lenses and had four different blonde wigs created especially for the series to match Anderson's bleach blonde hair and spare James's natural brunette hair from having to be bleached. The entire process took about four hours each day in the makeup chair. Costume designer Kameron Lennox also recreated some of Anderson's most iconic outfits for James, including the red swimsuit that she wore frequently on Baywatch.

Though the costumes and prosthetics did a lot to make Lily James look like Pamela Anderson, her performance in Pam & Tommy is a big part of what makes the transformation work. She not only looks like Anderson in the Hulu series, but masters the mannerisms and speech pattern of the Baywatch star. The series allows for a glimpse into the lives of Anderson and Lee, and does its best to humanize the subjects, who were often reduced to caricatures of themselves.
