The Palmer trailer for the upcoming movie gives viewers a glimpse of what looks to be Justin Timberlake's most emotional role ever. Since his movie career began in earnest 20 years ago, Timberlake has mostly starred in comedies and animated films, including the box-office hits Friends with Benefits and Trolls. Though he only dabbles periodically in dramatic fare, he tends to earn strong praise when he does, with his performance in David Fincher's The Social Network ranking among his best to date.

Timberlake is back in the dramatic lane with a trailer for the new Apple TV+ drama Palmer, which stars Timberlake as a former college football star whose career fell apart after a 12-year prison sentence. Following his release, Palmer returns to Louisiana to live with his mother and develops a guardianship over a young bullied boy named Sam. The film is directed by Fisher Stevens, who has most recently appeared in the hit HBO series Succession but is widely known for his acclaimed documentary work, particularly his Oscar-winning film The Cove. Timberlake has largely avoided live-action work in recent years, as his last on-screen role was in Woody Allen's 2017 period drama Wonder Wheel. The new Palmer trailer shows us the actor like we've never seen him, with his rugged and restless appearance marking a strong departure from the effortless cool that made him an icon in the first place. With Palmer releasing on January 29, well within the new eligibility window for the Oscars, Timberlake looks to be making a serious bid for the first nomination of his career.
