Apple AirPods are wildly popular, making them one of the most favored wireless earbuds on the market. Due to the popularity, there is going to be times where an AirPods owner wants to use their earbuds with a Sony PlayStation 4. After all, wireless headphones are ideal for gaming and with AirPods more portable design, they could be a lighter way to listen while gaming, compared to traditional headphones.

Using AirPods with a PlayStation 4 isn’t as easy as just plugging them in. While Apple's AirPods offer excellent wireless audio, the PS4 console does not support Bluetooth audio like many other devices do. As Sony’s PS4 does not make it easy to connect a set of third-party headphones to the games console, workarounds are needed. Although some options are easier than others, there are still options for those looking to pair AirPods to a PS4.

One of the easiest ways in which AirPods can be connected to a PS4 is with a Bluetooth transmitter. There are several Bluetooth transmitters on the market and they tend to range in price. Many of these devices have dual operations, which means they have a transmitter and receiver mode. Using a Bluetooth transmitter is quite simple, just turn on the PS4 and plug the Bluetooth adapter into the front USB port. Next, check the adapter’s manual and put it in pairing mode. Then press and hold the pairing button on the back of the AirPods charging case and the PS4 should automatically pair. Once pairing is complete, a pop-up message will confirm the connection between the AirPods and the PS4.

A Bluetooth transmitter can also be used to route audio from a television to a PS4, providing the TV has auxiliary support, such as a 3.5mm headphone jack port. Connect the television to the PS4 as normal with an HDMI cable and then plug the transmitter into the headphone jack on the TV. Again, put the transmitter in pairing mode and press and hold the pairing button on the AirPods. The transmitter and AirPods will automatically connect to each other enabling audio from the PS4 through the TV and to the AirPods.

Another easy method to connect Apple AirPods to a PS4 is with the Remote Play app for iPhone and Android smartphones. This app allows gamers to access the PS4 via Wi-Fi from anywhere. The app will only work on Android version 5.0 and above or iPhone models running iOS 13. Once the app is downloaded and activated, simply connect the Apple AirPods to the smartphone using the Bluetooth settings.

The ability to pair Apple AirPods with a PS4 will be beneficial to any gamers that prefer playing games using wireless headphones, instead of using the television audio or the mono earbuds included with the PS4. Apple AirPods are a great option and although it's not easy to connect them to a PlayStation 4, there are ways to bring the two together.
